Cardboard boat races attract hundreds to Lake Waccamaw

LAKE WACCAMAW, NC (WWAY) -- The weather was perfect this weekend for all types of water-sports, even...cardboard boat racing? That's right. Hundreds of people soaked up the sun at Lake Waccamaw for the North Carolina Cardboard Boat Championship races.

The challenge was to design and build a human-powered, cardboard boat that could finish, and stay afloat, during a 200-yard course around the lake. A few folks even put their imaginations to work while building.

"Well, I was so impressed in 2008 when the skull was found here in Lake Waccamaw. I just thought it would be a great tribute," said winning racer Brent Spivey. "Last year, they brought it back here to the lake. So I thought it would be pretty neat for the prehistoric whale to be on Lake Waccamaw again.

This year's race even included a pirate ship and Malibu Barbie. Racers say they never know if the boat will stay afloat, so designing it is half the fun.
