Bridge work to cause detour in Southport starting Sunday night

READ MORE:

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) -- Weather permitting, the NC Department of Transportation plans to close a section of NC 211 in Southport Sunday for preservation work on the bridge over the Duke Energy Progress Discharge Canal near the Brunswick Nuclear Plant.

Crews will close NC 211 between NC 87 and Dosher Cutoff SE each night from 7 p.m. until 6 a.m. If the weather cooperates, the work is expected to be done by the morning of Monday, July 1.

During the closures, motorists should use the following signed detour route:

NC 133 (Dosher Cutoff SE) to NC 87 (River Road) back to NC 211 (N. Howe Street).

The DOT says during preservation, a new sealant, called an epoxy overlay, will be applied to the bridge deck. The epoxy overlay process involves a thorough cleaning of the bridge deck. A liquid epoxy is then applied to the bridge deck to seal any cracks. Finally, stone is placed across the bridge deck to ensure excellent traction for vehicles. These enhancements will improve the ride quality for motorists, as well as help the 41-year-old bridge last longer by sealing and protecting the pavement from water damage.

Why Now???????

The person who scheduled this for the week leading up to the July 4th holiday should be forced to drive nightly from Oak Island to Wal-Mart in Southport at 7pm...

Why now? Why not?

Gotta be done.
A little inconvenience is not a bad thing

Vog

A Little?????????

Not questioning the need for it, questioning the timing of it. You should come visit Southport/Oak Island end of June, 1st part of July. It will be more than a "little" inconvenience.
