BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- The past of two Bladen County men found them squaring off behind bars yesterday.

Eric Bennett, 27, was arrested and charged with attempted murder back in February. Yesterday one of his alleged victims wound up in his jail cell.

Bladen County Sheriff's spokesman Capt. Rodney Hester says the jailer was not aware of the history between Bennett and Shawn Melvin, 39, and had no idea things would get so violent.

Deputies arrested Melvin yesterday for failure to appear in court, failure to pay child support and driving with a revoked license.

The jailer said when he put Melvin in the cell, Melvin attacked Bennett.

Capt. Hester says they asked Melvin when he was book if had any problems with any of the other inmates.

"Elizabethtown Police Department investigated the original case back in February," Hester said. "Mr. Melvin was asked if he had anyone in the jail that he would not want to be in the same cell with, and he answered no to that question."

Bennett was taken to the hospital, where was treated for a laceration on his head from the fight.

Melvin is charged with assault. Hester says he bonded out of jail.

Was it Karma or something else?

Mr. Melvin surely knew that his attacker was in jail but what was the odds of them sharing the same cell?? What is not given here is the back story as to what led up to this altercation. Did Bennett randomly attack Melvin or was there possibly some provocation leading up to this?? Melvin is not an innocent himself, child-support, licence, not appearing in court; compliance is apparently not his strong suit. Surely, he had to know if he missed court that a bench warrant would be issued and being caught driving on suspended licence with an outstanding warrant was a one way ticket to jail. Then again, we all should keep in mind that nothing really is happenstance it is all predestine. Seed and Harvest time, Sowing and Reaping, Karma whatever term you identify with is very real for all parties involved.

Whoops!

Guess 'ol Eric was Billy bad-a$$ when he had a gun back in February popping caps and all. Locked up, without a gun to hide behind, things didn't work out so well for him. One of his potential targets back in February, a dozen years his senior, even things out a little.

Why do I feel that we, as taxpayers, are the ones that are losing on this whole thing?

Apparently Melvin was being

Apparently Melvin was being honest when asked if there was anyone he didn't want to be with in a cell.

Perfect!

This isn't a mistake, its "karma", or better yet, street justice.

Not necessarily karma. It

Not necessarily karma. It could be that Melvin took his chances. He was asked if there was anyone he didn't want to be with in a cell. He said no. He could have been planning to attack Bennett. Given his history, it wouldn't be a surprise.

Not PC

I know it's not PC and I should be bothered that this kind of thing can occure, but I laughed my butt off at this story! You trolls can call me whatever you want, but to quote ole Larry the Cable Guy, "I don't care who ya are, that's funny right there"

Two?

I thought it was the same picture posted twice.
