Apparently some of the people that have commented on this subject are lazy and stupid. A bicycle is a mode of transportation just like a car is and has every right to be on the road. Some people in cars are self-centered and think that they are the only one that has the right away. The driver of the truck could have been drunk or fallen asleep.

Sad to say it but I have zero sympathy for cyclists these days. Every one I have come across on the road is EXTREMELY arrogant. They practically ride in the middle of the lane, don't care if they impede traffic and, when they are in a group, will ride 3 or 4 abreast and laugh because they know they are blocking traffic and don't care. This guy may have been innocent and no one deserves to get hit but "I understand" if he was one of the typicals.

bicyclist have this crazy notion that they have the right of way?

Yes they have right of way but the riders should also use some common sense and avoid high speed roads during rush hours AND stick to a path well clear of traffic. Several years ago I was coming back from Kure Beach and at the blind curve as you leave I noticed 2 cyclists on the inbound lane; I slowed a bit (thankfully!) and then all of a sudden I had a Dodge pickup half in MY lane and the middle of a curve to avoid the cyclists! I hit the shoulder to avoid a head on collision, said a few rude words (to myself) and debated the ancestry of all those involved. After that my view of cyclists went down a bit.. 6000 Lb truck Vs. 2000 Lb car; I would have been hamburger.

Please don't immediately blame the cyclist. I was a witness to an 18 wheeler truck change lanes and run a motorcycle off the road in to the grass. This caused the motorcyclist's death. I don't think the trucker driver saw him but they can become complacent and not watch their distance or mirrors like they should. In this case the driver stopped. Walked half way across the road, saw the dying man, and turned around got in his rig and took off. I am still upset after witnessing this terrible event. I am so glad this person is going to be ok.

the bicyclist was hit and did not intentionally drive away. Bicyclist could have been weaving back and forth like I see them do all the time making it nearly impossible to pass by them. Hope the truth comes out.

I suppose the right side of the truck hit the rider. If so, the trucker never knew he hit anybody unless he just happened to look in his right morror at the same time.
