Brunswick County family mourns after teen drowns in Shallotte River

READ MORE:

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- A Brunswick County family is mourning after investigators found the body of a 17-year-old high school student yesterday in the Shallotte River. Detectives say his death appears to have been an accident.

A spokeswoman for the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office says they received a call just before noon yesterday of a report of a missing person who may have fallen off of a private dock in the Shell Pointe community. The Sheriff's Office helicopter spotted the body a couple hours later.

Investigators identified the body as Silas Oller, 17, of Sunset Beach.

His family says Silas loved music and enjoyed playing instruments including the guitar. Silas was a sophomore at West Brunswick High School, where he also played with the jazz band.

His mother says this is a very difficult time for their family, and that right now they need help paying for their son's funeral arrangements.

Investigators say at this point the drowning appears to be accidental, but they are waiting for results of an autopsy.

In Honor of Silas..

I want to extend deepest condolences to your family of behalf of Bea's House Family Advocates (formerly domestic violence resources) I am based in Greensboro,NC, however my co-founder Simone and her family live near Silas' family and my Godson Xander was a close friend. Since Sunday evening I have been asking what we can do...where is the greatest need? We don't have a huge budget, but we have tons of resources to get assistance. If someone would like to contact me in a more private manner to discuss the needs you all have, I will move Heaven and earth to take care of as much as possible. Silas, by all accounts, is a remarkably talented young man, and as much as I wish I could give the blessings of his life and future back to you all and the world, I extend to you all prayers of peace, understanding and comfort in the God's plan being so much more complicated than our own.
