TOPSAIL BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- Some swimmers are lucky to be alive tonight, thanks to some surf instructors from Topsail Beach. What happened can only be described as heroic, but if you ask them it was all in a day's work.
Today was anything but normal for these WB surf camp instructors. When they got out to the beach they saw a pretty gnarly rip current and pointed it out to the kids.
Then, just before lunch, instructors noticed some people struggling in a rip current. Turns out, two separate families were fighting to stay afloat and these guys jumped into action. Are they heroes?
"I wouldn't really call us a hero," said surf instructor Deaton Wright. "I would just say we're doing our job and what we're trained to do."
"I don't know, heroes have to talk bold and daring action, this wasn't really bold or daring, it's just kinda what we do," added instructor Elisabeth Smith.
They credit the rescue to impeccable teamwork and training, adding the rescue is just all in a days work.
No word on who the victims were. The instructors say they were all shaken up, but doing fine when they got them safely out of the water.
