Recycling used Christmas trees will begin the day after the holiday for New Hanover County residents. The New Hanover County Environmental Management Department asks residents living outside city limits to take their trees to one of three locations this year.

Phil Berger has informed the mayors of several cities and the North Carolina League of Municipalities that should the cities continue to fight this new law in court, the General Assembly – which holds the sole Constitutional Authority over municipal boundaries – will simply create permanent municipal lines to stop these cities from imposing forced annexation.

Johnson & Johnson has issued another recall of Motrin pain relievers, at least the sixth in two years. This time, it's because the pills may not dissolve and begin working as soon as intended as they approach their three-year expiration date. That could delay relief of pain.

A serious crash involving a tractor trailer and a church van in Transylvania County Wednesday night has depleted our supply of O negative blood in the Asheville area, and we are now utilizing blood supplies from areas across the region. WLOS-TV reports 15 people were taken to area hospitals, including both drivers and 13 passengers. Many of the patients were children.
