Smithfield Foods announced they will close six plants around the country, including the one in Elon that produces country ham. One hundred sixty employees there will lose their jobs by the end of the year.

The county sheriff said West Bladen senior Jahkee Sledge had a record. He was arrested twice in 2007, once for bringing a weapon to school and once for assaulting someone at gunpoint.

It was close, but in the end, the Smithfield packing plant in Tar Heel is going union. The results were released Thursday night.
