Week number three of the high school football season is complete. All four high schools in Columbus County lost. All four high schools in New Hanover County won. Laney remains undefeated. Hoggard remains undefeated. Ashley gets their first win while New Hanover knocks off Wallace-Rose Hill. The Bulldog loss snaps a 30 game winning streak. It was the longest active streak in the state until Friday.

Gov. Bev Perdue has asked FEMA to add counties to its disaster declaration request for recovery, including derbis removal, after Hurricane Irene. The list includes several counties in our area, including Brunswick, Columbus, Duplin, Onslow and Pender.

Hurricane Irene will not appear in the "Top 10" list of North Carolina hurricanes. Not even close. However, Irene was a good reminder that even a "weak" hurricane or tropical storm can create impressive wind gusts and flooding rain.

Upon recommendation of the state health director, the NC Division of Marine Fisheries will temporarily close all coastal waters to shellfish harvesting effective immediately, due to potential impacts of floodwaters on these areas.

Irene looks to have landfall around 7:30 am Saturday just west of Cape Lookout, NC. The storm was a category one at the time, with maximum sustained winds of around 85 mph. The storm will continue to pull away from our area through the night, and be replaced by a hot and humid Sunday with a mix of sun and few clouds with light winds!
