Hoggard High School student facing felony drug charges

READ MORE:
WILMINGTON -- A Hoggard High School star running back is facing felony drug charges. The football career of Rashad Williams could be over after he was arrested for possession with intent to sell and distribute marijuana and possession of a schedule one controlled substance. Schedule one drugs include heroin and LSD, among others. The 18-year-old Hoggard senior is one of the football team's standout players. He was arrested around noon Monday near the high school's campus. Williams will appear in court at the end of the month. A spokesperson for the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office says Williams's arrest stems from a September 13 undercover sting at a Carolina Beach Road convenience store. Williams was in the store when authorities raided it and was found with drugs when everyone in the store was searched. School officials say punishments vary on a case by case basis for students charged with felonies. They can't comment on individual students' situations. Williams's mother Pamela said he is "doing great." If Williams is convicted of these felonies he is ineligible to play football under North Carolina High School Athletic Association rules.

Yep

Yea, the police are picking on him. They should just let him go. Poor poor guy, I'm sure it was all a mistake. Lets see, he didn't know it was illegal, it wasn't his, he was holding it for a friend. But by all means don't hold him responsible for his actions.

What the hell does black have to do with it?

I have read several comments on this discussion about this guy being black. What does the color of his skin have to do with the fact that he is up on Drug charges? Good lord, this child, regardless of color, is up on charges that will be investigated, regardless of color. Granted, with all the "race cards" that are pulled, even if he is guilty, he will never see that verdict. Personally, I hope he is not, being he is a very intelligent young man. He also is not a racial person, so why are you throwing that race card in to start with. Let him prove his innocence.....and quit worrying about race between black and whites, you need to worry about what you are going to live off of when you are old and they have given all the social security to the illegals who have not contributed one dime....get it together people...as of now, one in every ten cities across america, the whites are the minority....one day, you won't be able to pull the race card, but you will be poor because your SS money has gone to support the illegals.

STOP HATING! HE IS STILL

STOP HATING! HE IS STILL TALENTED, AND HE STILL HAS THE GIFTS HE WAS BLESSED WITH. EVERYONE MAKES MISTAKES. HE IS YOUNG, SO HE CAN GET HIS RECORD EXPONGED AND STILL GO ON TO DO GREAT THINGS IN LIFE. WHOEVER SAID ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST AND ALL OF THAT IS TRULY IGNORANT. WHAT HE DID WAS TRULY WRONG, BUT HE CAN STILL DO GOOD. LIFE IS NOT OVER FOR HIM. PRAY FOR HIM, AND THAT HE MAKES BETTER DECISIONS.

good

Well he just flushed his talent down the drain. Maybe he can play in the prison league. he is over 18 and charged with a felony so his record can't be expunged.

RE: STOP HATING

Sorry to burst your bubble but the guy is 18 which means he's a ADULT in the eyes of the court so he can't get his record exponged. He'll be stuck with these felonies for the rest of his life.

expunged

Under G.S.90-96, he can get a pass on one conviction if he stays clean for a year after conviction on the felony and then petitions court.

You are almost right

Under 90-96 he can go to drug court and then if he keeps his nose clean, and the odds are stacked against him since most people black or white never complete it, he can start over. The problem is he will be filling out College applications right now and one of the box's you have to check is "have you ever been charged with......." His choice, he will now pay up. His best bet is to plead not guilty, sounds like most of you would aquit him based on the fact he plays football.

What?

You mean things like this happen in counties other than Brunswick? I am shocked!

Rashad, No matter what

Rashad, No matter what anyone says, you can still have a bright future. Everyone makes mistakes. Luckily your bad one here hasn't killed you, so let it make you stronger, smarter and more of a man. Take what you get out of this experience to grow and turn it around. Something positive can come out of all this, and with the support from your family I hope you will do whatever it takes to see that success happen. Best of luck to you, be strong. There are alot of people who want nothing but the best for you.

Letting so many down

So many of your school mates and class mates depended on you and your athletic ability to take your team ahead in rankings. This means that students looked up to you as someone how they should follow their footsteps in. You have let everyone at your school down and have shown how not to be an example how not to be a leader. More horrible than that though, you have let yourself down, and potentially have destroyed what would have most likely been a lucritive sports career. And for what... a little bit of dope for a couple of hundred dollars. Another year and you could have been on your way to earning (legally), millions. But that dream, will stay just that....... a dream, and instead of being a winner.. you have let a school down, a community down, and have only proven that you are a looser. I hope the shame haunts you forever.

A FRIEND WHO IS STANDING BEHIND A FRIEND

I disagree with your comment. Rashad Williams is a good person who made a bad choice. There are numerous athletes doing the exact same thing but just haven't been caught. Does this make it right? No, but it just brings reality to the light. How do I a fellow classmate and friend feel toward Rashad? I can understand what he is facing, I do not think of him in a lesser regard. Rashad "IS" a person of pride who I respect. I do not think he should be "put on the trash pile" because of one bad choice. Why criticise him more when he already has a heavy load on his back. As a black male who is faced with similar situations on a day to day basis I stand behind Mr. Williams and will be the one who will not gie up on him. If people of his own race and culture will not support him who will. I hate to say this but if we don't white people sure won't! It doesn't take much to make a mistake, but it takes alot to recover from one. Rashad, I will stand behind you and represent you in your absence. I cannot allow others to degrade a good friend and stand their and not defend you. You are a grown man, you control your future after this. Don't be another O.J. your fans and friends/family and people of color need you to continue to be the hero you have shown us you can be. Stay up bruah

RE: AFRIEND

Oh please.... stop playing the race card and telling everyone what a heavy load you carry. Act like a productive member of society and stop blaming all your issues on the fact that you are a "black male who is faced with similar situations on a day to day basis". You are a man so act like it!!

You're Wrong

O.B-Real, your theory/opinion is severely flawed. You said "Rashad Williams is a good person who made a bad choice." I argue that if he's such a "good person" that he would have never been in a situation of this nature. Stop making excuses and admit the truth. This "good person" feels he's invincible and above the law. He's the "star" running back; "can't nobody stop 'em"...wake up..."good people" don't do things like this. I'm so sick of the same excuses...and then when people get caught in this situation they are portrayed as saints of the community...makes me want to vomit. He should be a man, admit his mistake, pay his dues, and move on with his life.

a friend who is standing behind a friend

If you support illegal activity of any kind you are a fool! Is he a friend or an acquatence, there is a great differnce!

You are such a loser? What

You are such a loser? What is your child doing? Has your child even been a star of anything, probably not. He is still a leader, maybe this has happened to prevent something that might have happened to him further in the future. He can still turn his life around, and start all over. His life is not over. None of us are perfect. Jesus is the only one who was perfect. So who are we to judge people? You never know what God has in store. He might have let some down, but that doesn't mean they have to stay down. You should never put your faith in man, look up to God. He is the only one who is perfect, not us. He is who is without sin, let him cast the first stone . . .

guest123

"You are such a loser? What is your child doing? Has your child even been a star of anything, probably not." NOT SURE WHO YOUR COMMENT WAS DIRECTED AT BUT I FOR ONE WILL ANSWER. ALONG WITH MANY OTHER PARENTS THAT RAISED DECENT HUMAN BEINGS. Hummm, when my son was 18 he did not play football, was not a "star" (except to his family), he did not SELL DRUGS..... He was too busy working after school, making A/B's and getting a 1350 on his SAT's. He was well guided, given a lot of care and good parenting, love, acceptance and patience by both his Mother and Father. He is 23 now, never smoked, drank or did drugs. I would say that makes him way MORE OF A STAR THAN THIS BALL THROWER/DRUG PUSHER WILL EVER BE. Pretty darn sad when you have to "START OVER" at 18. Geeeez. Cut the God crap, it's too late for that now. Where was your God BEFORE this ball thrower got into drugs? Good question, why do you expect your God to come clean up your messes?

WHY DOESN'T HE DESERVE ANOTHER CHANCE!!!

NOT EVERY CHILD HAS THE SUPPORT THEY NEED FROM PARENTS OR MONEY-WISE. HE IS YOUNG AND THIS IS ONE OF THE FEW MISTAKES THAT HE MADE. A LESSON LEARNED. HE WILL GET THROUGHT IT WITH OR WITHOUT FOOTBALL. TAKING HIS FOOTBALL CAREER AWAY ONLY GIVES HIM BEING A BLACK MALE A REASON TO COUNTIUE TO DISTRUBITE IN THE STREETS AND OR SCHOOLS. WHAT IS CRAZY IS THAT EVERYONE KNOWS THAT YOU CAN KILL SOMEONE AND STILL GET MONEY FOR SCHOOL AND IT IS THE EXACT OPPOSITE WHEN IT COMES TO DRUGS. RASHAD I MAY NOT KNOW YOU AS WELL AS OTHERS BUT I AM GOING TO GIVE YOU SOME ADVICE DO NOT GIVE UP, DON'T WORRY ABOUT WHAT ANYONE IS SAYING ABOUT YOU. IF YOU DO GET CHARGED STILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE AND PROVE PEOPLE WRONG. SOME OF THE MOST RICH AND FAMOUS PEOPLE MADE MISTAKES AND HAVE CHANGED THEIR LIFE COMPLETEY. SO KEEP YOUR HEAD UP!!! JUST TAKE THIS AS A LESSON LEARNED!! AND GOD WILL HELP YOU IN THIS NO MATTER WHAT OTHERS MAY SAY!!!

God Forgives

I wasn't going to say anything about this story until I read guest123 remarkes. Yes, this young man made a stupid mistake, but who doesn't? Who are we to judge one another? I am sick and tired of all the gang banging, drug dealing like everybody else. We need to save this kid from the streets and pray for him. His life is not over, he just have to deal with the consequence of his actions. I want everyone to know that whatever decision we make in life, good or bad then there will be a consequence. I do understand that some people don't believe in God and that's your choice, but understand for not believing in Him u will also have a consequence, so don't judge Rashad for what he had done cause I am pretty sure if we digg in your closet we would pull up some mess. God will forgive Him if he ask, and understand that is why He sent His son Jesus to saved us from our sins/mess. Rashad I am praying for you and however, u get out of this don't stop pursuing your dreams. Don't give up cause God haven't given up on you. U can make it, but hang in there through all the negativity. No one is perfect, but I hope u have learned from this. Please don't make the same mistakes twice if u get out of this with mercy. Trust God during this time and pray to Him, He is the only one that can see u through this with a peace of mind. To the gang community, Stop the violence and understand that if u live by the sword(gun) u die by it. Why take lives when u didn't create it. Young people u r our future so please stop taking each others lives. Be Bless!

Cut the God crap? What makes

Cut the God crap? What makes you an authority on how people should deal with bad experiences in their lives. You sound so bitter. Nobody is downing your kid, lady. Please don't down people's beliefs.

ball thrower

Ya'll can pray till the cows come home, waste your time cause it won't help anyone. Every time someone gets in the news for doing illegal activity the folks come out with the "He's a good boy" and "God will forgive him, pray for him"......blaaahblaaahblaaah Good boy's do NOT sell/do drugs and if they gave one hoot about God in the first place they wouldn't be doing it EVER !!! Pray all ya want. I am not bitter at all, just damn glad my kids were raised right.

Letting everyone down?

Hardly. He just reinforced the stereotype image. "Keeping it real" as they say.

football star

Ha. Another one bites the dust BUT, hes "doing great"?????? Mom's in denial.

doin' great...and doin' time

doin' great...and doin' time

Naturally

The mother naturally will protect and make sure others will not look down on their younguns. I am sure with as much egg on his face that her son is facing.... "He is doing great", is about all she can say. Hopefully she can pull him up out of this mess, and we, the county, should be grateful that he was not a crack dealer. Pot will not ruin his potential career if he is handed the right lawyer.

pbsgirl

He had other things, READ the article. "sell and distribute marijuana and possession of a schedule one controlled substance. Schedule one drugs include heroin and LSD, among others." I guess you think crack is worse than heroin or LSD !!! His mommy shouldn't have to pull him OUT of this mess, she should have KEPT him from doing this all together...... too late now.

Drug Player

How can he not be guilty when they FOUND the drugs on him????? He should be banned from all high school sports. College!!! For-get-about-it!!!!

Hoggard high

Socio-economic diversity, as practiced in New Hanover County, by bussing students to achieve some theoretical formula has not, can not, and will not be successful.

SO Sorry!

Thats too bad that you just threw your life away for drugs! Use better judgement next time! The community is glad that you will be unable to attend a state university under our tax dollars now. Better to weed out the bad apples early! Next time pick a better role model!

Hope for the mother that he can come out of this "doing great"

Your son is living in a type of southern county that will allow him the chance to have not thrown his life away for drugs. At his age, being busted can certainly be a LIFE CHANGE thing, and some have pulled out of that with a sports future. Yes, he has been tempted by, and enjoyed the benefits of being a drug dealer > being a drug addict. But, at that age.,,,, if he decides that playing sports is more fun.... and he has been taught by his parents that deep happiness in one's chosen career IS A NECESSITY in the high dollar career (be that sports, writing, advertising, selling). He will choose to end the easy and risky drug money and go for the sports money and the kind of FAME THAT MAKES MOTHER Proud!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ignorance

its not funny he threw his life away its sad and the ones who have something to say like hes a bad apple or something stupid if he was white they'd be saying he made a mistake and blame something dumb like he was influenced by rap
