You may recall back in December, we brought you the story of a special middle school student. In the frigid cold, then 12-year-old Ari Garsh, volunteered his time and money to collect pet food at a local Lowe's food store for the Pender County Animal Shelter. Today, we caught up with Ari, now 13, as he braved the dangerous heat for a cause he truly believes in.

We often hear from viewers who want to see more coverage of positive things going on in our community. In an effort to do this, we are showcasing the people and groups doing good around our area and how you can get involved. The world can be changed if you "just add hope." Carolina Canines is an organization made up of volunteers who train service dogs for people around our area and around the country who are disabled or need therapy.

First Fruit Ministries in Wilmington helps feed the hungry and give the homeless shelter. But the charity is also giving the people it helps life skills to get them on their feet.

Joplin, MO, is a small city that April’s storms put on the map as soon as they wiped it off. It was then that Wilmington photographer Amy McConnell grabbed her camera and hit the road to her hometown to capture the devastation. McConnell says she found one thing still standing amongst the rubble: the American flag.
