This afternoon two pieces of the World Trade Center will arrive in the Port City to become parts of monuments to the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. One monument will sit at Cape Fear Community College. The other will be at the Wilmington Fire Department's new station at Empie Park.

Sources tell WWAY Wilmington firefighters will pick up two pieces of the World Trade Center June 6 in New York. The pieces will arrive back here in Wilmington two days later, where they will be unveiled at Independence Mall.

Today, business and community leaders attended the CFCC Foundation's annual Gift of Education fundraising luncheon. Organizers said the seventh annual event raised awareness of the importance of supporting and strengthening our state's community college system. Perhaps most importantly the event raised about $180,000.

One thing County Commission Chair Jonathan Barfield said will be cut is money to Cape Fear Community College. Barfield says CFCC asked the county for $1.4 million, but the county has allocated only $300,000.

Students in CFCC's Industrial Systems Technology program gathered at Fort Fisher to inspect the condition of a cannon used in historical reenactments. The students tested for cracks in the cannon, but they did it without tearing it apart.
