Firefighters responded to a blaze at 111 Starfish Drive in Holden Beach Saturday around 7:30 a.m. Less than one month ago, the home received water damage while crews worked to put out another fire that destroyed two homes next to it.

Holden Beach has very little damage caused by Irene. The beach strand suffered, but the dune system overall is in good shape. Some roof shingles and some vinyl siding has been blown off a few homes. Otherwise, there is no serious damage.

The state Division of Environmental Health today lifted a water quality swimming alert at an ocean-side site in Brunswick County. The alert affected waters at the public beach access located at the east end of Holden Beach.

The alert affects waters at the public beach access located at the east end of Holden Beach. Samples collected yesterday show test results of 111 enterococci per 100 milliliters of water, which exceeds the state and federal single-sample standard of 104 enterococci per 100 milliliters for Tier 1 high usage sites. Swimming areas are classified based on recreational use and are referred to as tiers.
