Yesterday was the deadline for Monkey Junction residents and property owners near Southport to return annexation denial petitions. It's unofficial right now, but both communities returned more than 75 percent of the petitions. Only 60 percent were needed to block annexation.

The New Hanover County Board of Elections needs 60% of homeowners in Monkey Junction to sign the petition against annexation if the town is going to avoid that action from the city of Wilmington. As of Thursday, the board has received 62%.

Monkey Junction has long been a hub of business in our area. It's part of why the City of Wilmington wants to annex it. Several new businesses are setting up shop there, but others that have called the crossroads home for years say it's a dead end.

The biggest change in the law would let property owners block an annexation if 60 percent of them sign a petition of opposition. The town or city would be barred from trying again for three years.

The NC Court of Appeals today upheld Wilmington's annexation of Monkey Junction. Opponents can still appeal to the NC Supreme Court.
