NC nuclear plant shut down after crack discovered

Operators have shut down a North Carolina nuclear plant after finding tiny marks of corrosion and cracking that need repair. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says the health and safety of employees or the public are not affected.

HAPPENING TODAY: NRC hosts open house to discuss Brunswick Nuclear Plant

Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials have scheduled an open house for April 24 to discuss the agency’s assessment of safety performance during 2012 for the Brunswick nuclear power plant. The plant, operated by Duke Energy, is near Southport.

Crews restore power after thousands experienced outages in New Hanover Co.

Progress Energy reaches deal on rate increase

videoIt looks like power rates are going up for a lot of people in southeastern North Carolina. Progress Energy Carolinas says it has reached an agreement with the North Carolina Utilities Commission Public Staff to raise its rates as early as this summer.

'Unusual event' reported at Brunswick Nuclear Plant

Progress Energy says operators declared an "unusual event" at the Brunswick Nuclear Plant in Southport today. The power company says it was caused by a freon release from an HVAC chiller on the plant's unit 2 turbine building roof.
