North Carolina's major party candidates for governor have starkly different views on whether the state's economy is on the right track. That difference may explain why Democrat Walter Dalton and Republican Pat McCrory diverged on the scope of changes needed for North Carolina's tax system during interviews with the Associated Press.

Romney says he's paid taxes every year

Mitt Romney says he's never paid less than 13 percent of his income in taxes during the past decade. Romney told reporters Thursday that Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's claim that Romney paid no taxes in some years is, quote, "totally false."

video A new Civitas Flash Poll shows large majorities of registered voters in Wilmington continuing to oppose spending taxpayer money on a new baseball stadium. In the recent poll, 80 percent of voters said they were opposed to taxpayer funding of a proposed $40 million baseball park in Wilmington. Opposition rose to 84 percent when they were asked what they thought about the plan if it would raise their taxes.

Carolina Beach revenue to drop despite higher tax rate

Carolina Beach Town Council held a public hearing on the budget proposal for the 2012 - 2013 fiscal year. They adopted a 16.1 million dollar budget calling for a tax rate of 23.5 cents per hundred, an increase from the current rate of 17.5 cents.

Perdue offers sweepstakes machines tax option for education
