Pairings set for second round of playoffs

The brackets are now set for round two of the high school football state playoffs. Round two games will be held on November 21. Games are likely to be much closer than some of the outcomes we saw in the first round.

Hammerheads temporarily lose two players; plus see the best rushing TD of the season?

videoTwo players on the Wilmington Hammerheads team have been suspended by USL Pro for their roles in an altercation on the soccer field last Saturday in California. Plus, the frontrunner for the play of the year for high school football appears to be a rushing touchdown from last week's West Columbus-East Columbus game.

videoWest Columbus High is this week's WWAY Farm Bureau Mayfaire Team of the Week recipient. The Vikings won their football season opener for the first time since 2006. It was a decisive victory over a county rival.

videoThe 2014 high school football regular season is underway. On Friday we had coverage from several games. We expected to have a full slate, but the weather interfered with those plans. Some games were completed. Some started, but will need to be resumed. Some games never started.

West Columbus Vikings look to improve on 3 win football season with new head coach

videoJason Jones is the new head football coach at West Columbus High School. He'll also be the school's new director of athletics. Jones takes over a football team that finished with a 3-10 record last season.

West Columbus basketball coach Michael Powell reassigned; Chris Haney leaves East Columbus

videoMichael Powell is the dean of high school basketball coaches in our region. He's been the head boys basketball coach for 27 years at West Columbus High School. Powell has been reassigned to rival East Columbus, but Powell may not accept the assignment. Powell may opt to retire instead. Chris Haney has resigned as the head football coach at East Columbus High School in order to go back to Ashley High.

Shepard, O'Donnell & Hood; not a law firm, just 3 local baseball players for NC State + more!

videoChance Shepard, Joe O'Donnell and Nathan Hood all played their high school baseball in SE North Carolina. They're now teammates at NC State. This week the mission is clear for these Wolfpack baseball players; make the ACC Baseball Tournament. If that happens the chips may end up falling later this month for a potential spot in the NCAA Tournament.
