Interesting match-ups for Round Two of high school football playoffs
It is a long and complicated story, but the Pine Forest Trojans, despite losing last week, will face New Hanover High School in Wilmington in the second round of the state playoffs.
"They have a quarterback that can run all the over the place. They have a receiver going to Nebraska and they have two more that are going somewhere, they just haven't decided," said New Hanover head coach Kevin Motsinger.
Hoggard High School will also be playing in Wilmington Friday night. The Vikings will host the Lumberton Pirates. Both squads are 8-4.
Hoggard center Matthew Braswell said, "We're very excited. They're a good team. They have good defensive linemen and some others that we're excited about going up against."
Lumberton utilizes a tricky misdirection offense. Ian Halkius is prepared though. "We're going to keep them off the board. If they can't score they won't win,” he said.
West Brunswick also has a round 2 home playoff game. The Trojans will host Fayetteville Douglas Byrd.
Undefeated East Bladen will host Louisburg. Last season East Bladen finished as a state runner-up. And the Pender Patriots will entertain Ayden-Grifton. We'll have highlights of these games on Friday's 5th Quarter Show on WWAY with even more coverage on the Coach's Corner on Sunday.
Let's not forget about the teams that have to hit the road for round 2.
Whiteville has a five-hour bus ride to Kitty Hawk. Whiteville will face First Flight High School. West Columbus has a long trip as well. The Vikings will travel to Mount Airy. Trask is in the same boat. They Titans have a four-hour bus ride to Gates County High School.

New Hanover football faces "new" opponent in playoff game
The New Hanover High School football team has a new second round opponent for their state playoff game. The Pine Forest Trojans will visit Legion Stadium Friday, despite the fact the Trojans lost in the first round to Terry Sanford High School.
Pine Forest lost on the football field, but the team won in a Cumberland County courtroom Tuesday afternoon. At issue - the eligibility of a Terry Sanford player. That player was ultimately declared ineligible.
A judge ruled Terry Sanford can no longer participate in the playoffs, so Pine Forest will be coming to Wilmington Friday night.

The UNC-Wilmington men's soccer team earned the CAA's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament Sunday with a 1-0 win over Northeastern University. Monday night, the team gathered at Buffalo Wild Wings to watch the tournament selection show.
The team's first round opponent will be the Charlotte 49ers. The game will be in Charlotte Thursday night. The winner will advance to face Wake Forest.
“My immediate reaction, seeing my alma mater when it came up on the draw, was a bit surprised. I actually thought it might happen. For our players I'm really excited because we knew any team right now would be a difficult opponent and Charlotte certainly will be,” said coach Aidan Heaney.
Thursday's game for UNCW will be their first-ever appearance in the men's NCAA tournament.

UNCW earns a ticket to the NCAA Soccer Tournament with CAA Tournament Title
To guarantee themselves a spot in the NCAA Tournament the UNC Wilmington Seahawks had to beat Northeastern on Sunday afternoon in the championship game of the CAA Tournament. With just under 4 minutes to play in regulation junior Nassim Berhouni broke a scoreless deadlock. The ball slid past the Huskie keeper and the celebration was on for UNC Wilmington. And what a celebration it was as the team and the fans sensed a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Nassim Berhouoni said: "I just got lucky. The ball bounced up right in front of me and I just smacked it into the net. Great celebration there ! It's not just me. It could have been anybody and the boys played great."
Once regulation play ended the ticket to the dance became a punched ticket !! UNC Wilmington captured the CAA Tourmament 1-0. Brock Duckworth said: " I'm estatic. Our team played phenomenal all the way from kickoff. We've had a great season. We're still undefeated at home which is amazing. We've only given up 12 goals all season, had another shutout in the final against Northeastern."
The victory for UNCW also extended their unbeaten streak to 13 and they tied a school record for most wins in a season with 14. Seahawk head coach Aidan Heaney added: " We're so excited to be able to compete for a national championship and I think our players deserve to be there."
The team will found out their opponent late Friday afternoon when the NCAA Tournament bracket is released.

It may sound unusual, but a Viking officially became a Bear Friday. Hoggard guard Danielle Bongiorno signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Lenoir-Rhyne University next year.
Coach Ray Beatty said Bongiorno has the heart of a lion and made his job a lot easier when she was on the court. Bongiorno said her time as a Viking will help her as she moves on to college.
“I learned how to be a leader here, I really had to learn how to lead my team and we just all worked together. You know just being a leader on the court and off the court,” said Bongiorno.
Last year, Bongiorno helped lead the Vikings to a Mideastern Conference championship with a 25 and 3 record.
Bongiorno shared the credit for Friday's accomplishment and said she looking forward to playing on the collegiate level.
