Wilmington resident and legendary tennis professional Lenny Simpson will be inducted into the Black Tennis Hall of Fame later this month. Simpson turned professional in 1973 and was the first African-American to play World Team Tennis. Simpson qualified for Wimbledon in 1974. Full story...

Former Hoggard Viking offensive lineman Jonathan Cooper missed his entire rookie season with the Arizona Cardinals after breaking his leg in a preseason game last August. Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians earlier this week said Cooper needs to shake off the rust. Cooper even admitted his level of play is not where it needs to be. The Wilmington Waves 7th grade basketball team captured a national title for travel basketbal in Myrtle Beach. Hoggard football coach Scott Braswell is back in Wilmington. The 2014 baseball season is now over for the Wilmington Sharks. The playoffs will start on Wednesday, but the Sharks won't be included. Full story...

The Richmond Kickers came into Friday's USL Pro soccer game at Legion Stadium as the second place team in the league. Friday marked the first day high school football teams are permitted to hit the practice field for the upcoming season. Most squads waited for the sun to come up, but that was not the case at Laney. The Buccaneers waited for the clock to strike midnight. Our report from Buctown includes standout Tariq Lane. The senior has decided to attend Laney after contemplating a move to Charlotte.
