Sheriff Hewett indicted with embezzlement, obstruction

READ MORE: Sheriff Hewett indicted with embezzlement, obstruction

BOLIVIA -- Removed from office last week, Brunswick County Sheriff Ron Hewett was indicted on four criminal charges today.

Hewett's problems have grown dramatically since a federal investigation was launched in June. As that process was dragging on in Raleigh, many of Hewett's own deputies were helping to amass a case against him here at home.

Ron Hewett entered the courtroom flanked by his lawyers -- a courtroom with many of his supporters present.

But this time Hewett sat on the defendant's side of the room, the prosecutor not his ally but his accuser.

Angie Robinson said she wasn't there for the sheriff, she was there for her lifelong friend "Ronnie" and to hear if his suspension would be made permanent. That would become the lesser of his problems.

more on the hewett story here...

There was a stunning shift of directions in that courtroom. What started as a hearing on his suspension turned into a presentation of criminal charges against Ron Hewett: three counts of embezzlement and one count of obstruction of justice -- all of which carry lengthy prison terms if convicted.

The three embezzlement counts by a public official involve using more than $1,300 in county money to paint campaign signs, guard his home and do work on his property.

The obstruction count accuses Hewett of ordering a detective not to arrest a relative of the sheriff in a child molestation case because it could be politically damaging.

Some were surprised by the timing.

District Attorney Rex Gore said, "The criminal process and the petition to remove were moving on parallel tracks. We got the petition to remove ready last week and filed that knowing we had scheduled the grand jury hearing for the true bills that were returned today."

As deputies looked on, the man who had been their boss was ordered not to have contact with any of them who had sworn affidavits against him. All guns were ordered removed from his possession, and Judge Ola Lewis set a $25,000 secured bond.

Ron Hewett had nothing to say as he and his wife left the court house, but those who watched the proceedings had some strong opinions.

Courtroom spectator Erica Ramsey said, "I'm glad that they got him on this, and I wish someone would look -- it goes farther than this, I'm pretty sure."

Courtroom spectator Joyce Elliott said, "I'm sick at heart. I've know Ronnie for a long time. I was a fifth grade teacher when he was a DARE officer. He did a lot of good things for Brunswick County. If he was guilty I'd have to hear him admit it to believe it."

Unless there's some kind of plea bargain deal looming, that will become the task of a jury.

Hewett could face more than 12 years in prison if convicted on all counts. No charges have yet been filed in the federal investigation.

The hearing on his suspension has been rescheduled for May 5. County Coroner Greg White will continue as acting sheriff in the interim.

Hewett suspended Thursday

Hewett was suspended Thursday night after Rex Gore filed a petition for his removal. The grounds: neglect or refusal to perform the duties of his office, willful misconduct or maladministration in office, extortion and intoxication.

Gore presented a binder full of evidence to back up the charges. It includes more than 20 affidavits, most of them from deputies and most of them containing some damning statements. There were also supporting photos and audio recordings of Hewett's activities. Gore said some of Hewett's own deputies were instrumental in building this case.

"They had begun the process before we joined forces with our investigation," Gore said.

Several deputies arriving for work at the Sheriff's Office in Bolivia Friday morning had no comment for NewsChannel 3 about their boss's suspension.

Gore's evidence includes several phone calls between Hewett and other members of the Sheriff's Office. In a call with Capt. Kevin Holden on August 16, 2007, Hewett appears to speak of suicidal plans as he tells Holden that many of Hewett's friends won't take or return his calls in the midst of an investigation of the sheriff by a federal grand jury.

(Listen)

"I know you are down," Holden tells the Sheriff. "I'm trying to bring you back up."

Hewett responds: "There ain't no bringing me back up. I'm looking for a bank robbery in (expletive deleted) progess. That's what I want."

Hewett won't explain what he means by looking for a bank robbery. But several minutes later, he brings it up again, telling Holden that dying would be better than what he was going through.

(Listen)

"I'm telling you, something's (expletive deleted) up. And they think I know it," Hewett said. "I don't know it. And go ahead and kill me. Take the .357 and kill my ass. Like I said, I'm looking for me a damn bank, man. Mitch Prince got a hell-of-a lot better end then I did."

Mitch Prince was a Boiling Spring Lakes police officer killed in the line of duty in January 2005.

Hewett has been the target of a closely guarded federal investigation for several months. A host of people have been called to testify before a federal grand jury in Raleigh. Gore says this removal is unrelated to that investigation. Although some of the allegations may overlap, this was a separate action. Gore says per state law, county coroner Greg White is serving as acting sheriff.

The affidavits in the book of evidence tell repeated stories of misconduct. Capt. Gene Caison grew up with Hewett. He details numerous instances of deputies on county time being used to do manual labor on Hewett's property or forced to work on Hewett's campaign signs and fundraisers. Caison also details highly erratic conduct by the sheriff.

Other deputies and a SBI agent detail numerous incidents where Hewett showed up to crime scenes intoxicated and interfered with investigations. In once case, Hewett allegedly arrived at a home where a man had barricaded himself inside. With the SWAT team on the scene, witnesses say an apparently intoxicated Hewett kicked down the front door and went into the home with his teenage son Justin.

There are also several pages devoted to county money and resources spent on Hewett's son Justin from the time Justin was a teenager, including Hewett assigning a vehicle belonging to the Sheriff's Office to his son, even after Justin Hewett had been hired as a police officer in Holden Beach. Witnesses also say Hewett requested his son be certified to use firearms and that Justin was seen at times carrying a badge and other BCSO equipment, even though he was too young to be a deputy.

Other allegations include:

  • Hewett sexually harassed several female employees.
  • Hewett used racial epithets.
  • Hewett ordered deputies to buy and deliver alcohol to him.
  • Hewett denied a request by a deputy to search a neighborhood for Billy Wade Russ, a missing man, who was later found in a neighbors yard, just feet from Russ's own property.
  • Hewett arrived drunk at the scene of a submerged car in October 2005 and that his son Justin removed the body of Kendrick Sparrow from the car against established investigative protocol. Investigators found that Sparrow had been shot before his car ran off the road.

A hearing on the removal petition is set for Monday at noon. At that point Hewett can argue to have it overturned. If his removal is upheld, it would fall upon the Brunswick County Democratic party to pick a new sheriff.

I think supply fire department is doing well and tyring to keep out the good old boys. and the rift and the raft and the wanna be law man . these people came to help others as firemen but turned out to be hipocrits. downing all departments so they can make there self look good. Get a life (you will fide out who's your friend)

I'm glad to see that all of

I'm glad to see that all of you are so quick to comment on this event and it ranks in county concern with something as important as the sheriff. But I really wish if you were going to make these educated comments you would use spell check or buy a dictionary.Thank you very much! "Raft"

LEAVE

LEAVE BRITTNEY ALONE!!!! (OH AND RONALD HEWETT!)

Well time to take him out back (Just Like Old Yeller)

Looks like you people feels so sorry for Ronald, Old Yeller seemed like a nice puppy to cast your votes for many years for him to be in term that long. Now he turned crooked and never did thought he was gonna get caught. Yea I know hes intoxicated in his calls but a DRUNK MAN SPEAKS A SOBER MIND. Now since he got himself into trouble, and his supporters wants to pat his head and rub his but. Looks like its time to take Old Yeller out back and get rid of him (fire his but)

is ron robbing bb&t to RUN.....

Ronald, when you find a bank are you planning to take the money and run?? Sounds like you should be locked up during the trial or you wont be around..... P.S.- please be sober for your big day tomorrow

COURTHOUSE MON 4 M.PRINCE

COURTHOUSE MONDAY TO SUPPORT RONALD????? MAYBE WE SHOULD BE AT THE COURTHOUSE MONDAY SUPPORTING THE PEOPLE WHO HELPED BRING HIM DOWN OR IN THE HONOR OF THE DEAD OFFICER WHOM HE COMPARES HIMSELF TOO.....................

Support? please!!!

I cannot understand WHY anyone will choose to support "This FINE man(as they call him)". When there is clear/plain as day evidence of many cases of wrongdoing. If anything I would be there to remember and honor the wonderful things Mitch did for our little community. I agree with you on supporting the one who helped bring all this to light and honoring Mitch.

Get Real

Get real Ronald Hewett is not the same man that we first elected. I can't believe some of the support that he is getting. The man thought he was above the law. Yes he did a lot of good things but that does not place him above the law. Let me also let you in on a few facts THERE IS MORE TO COME! I saw one comment making reference to a deer hunting injury. That was no accident at all, you will hear all very soon. Tampering with a witness is a serious federal charge. We have all heard him admit that he is guilty on that count. Why do some of you people still support him?? Any case he had anything to to with has a chance of being retried or over turned. GET REAL AND SEE THE FACTS AND NOT .....YOUR "STAND BY YOUR MAN" BACK WOODS MENTALITY.

LET'S NOT START POINTING FINGERS

BRACE YOURSELF FOR THIS ONE. How about we take a step back and look at this situation from a different point of view. Grasp your focus from the man in the spotlight and take a look at the "inoccent, scared for their job",officers who stood up for the citizens of Brunswick county. These men who recorded their so-called "friend", must be pretty sorry. These same men who are accusing the sheriff of DRINKING, aught to be ashamed of themselves. I have seen these "innocent" officers getting very intoxicated, at Mr. Hewett's "slave driving" (HAHA) fundraising golf tournament!!! Mind me, getting intoxicated is not illegal, if your of age, but driving a county owned vehicle after getting DRUNK, just might be illegal. Now let's take the media's numbers and do some math. The news told us that some 20 officers signed affidavits. There are approximately 200 employees that work at the sheriff's department. So that large number 21 don't seem so big next to 200, Oooh but the news left that out. I think that is... like 10%, what ever happened to majority rule? Oh yeah, i don't want to see anymore posts about things morally wrong with conversations that were discussed over the telephone, "A supposedly one person talking to another, in confidence," situation. Think back and see if you have ever said anything on the phone that you wouldn't say in public. Bet you weren't recorded were you??????

20%

You're right, that is only about 20% of the department. What you have to keep in mind, that 20% were the ones that had the most contact with the Sheriff. His Capt.,Lts, and so forth. These were the guys that he called on, not the road deputies or office personnel. I have read the report filed against him and am shocked at some of the things that were in it, and I'm in law enforcement! As for his drinking, you guys are correct, it's not against the law to drink or get drunk. It is ignorant to show up to crime scenes that way and you have to keep in mind, his "innocent" officers weren't showing up drunk to these scenes.

Agreeing with this post 100%

Those who are accusing.... well in agreement with the above... they should be investigated as they are not as "straight up" as they are claiming. They should definitely talk to all the other employees in the BCSD.. bet they will get a WHOLE different picture.

BC taking action

It is finally time that something is done about the corruption in BC Government. I hate to see this happening to Ronald, but he is not above the law and the issues must be addressed accordingly. Now, I can only hope that this sends a STRONG message to County Management that we need to be looking very closely at all the corruption going on at that complex. Let me also that this inquiry does not need to stop with Ronald. Lets go ahead and look at these folks who have underminded the work of the Sheriff previously, and will continue to do so as long as they are employees. I am speaking of Mr. Caison, Mr. Holden and others as they are NOT CLEAN. They need demotion and placed back on the road or made to retire. Our Sheriffs office needs extensive restructuring. Now, as far as the rest of BC Government, lets also look at the DA's office and clean it up and also the Emergency Services Department led by crooked Randy Thompson. He also has that good ole boy appearance and is just as crooked and sneaky as the day is long. Citizens, lets clean up our government, it is way over due.

Sheriff and Schools

Now we have someone to police the sheriff's department, who is going to police the Brunswick County School System? We have had many lawsuits and a school system out of control and it just continues on as if it will go away by itself...when and who will ever be held responsible while our children suffer?????

Suffering Children

If your children are suffering at a public school, do the job yourself! Home school, private school, move your house. If you can be a better sheriff---do it. Teachers don't get into the system to torture your child for little money. Every teacher I know works their butt off trying to offer the best education possible considering the different dynamics in a classroom. Be my guest---

Ronald

I hope the best for Ronald Hewett. I'm still proud to say I always supported him for office, he really did a lot of good things for Brunswick County. Maybe some day we will see him in our favorite movies as I think he would make a great actor from the one movie I saw of him. I only hope the best for him and his family.

The movie would be called

The movie would be called the "Texas backstab massacre"!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Everybody in the BC knew

Everybody in the BC knew Sheriff hewett was always up to somthing. I am glad somone finally put an end to his reign in office and we can move on and be a better safer county

I tried to tell you

I tried to tell you what kind of man Mr. Hewett is 14 years ago. I will be there in the morning to watch Mr. Hewett take the same walk that I took 14 years ago....from the door to the parking lot. Keep the faith!

Thank you, I only wish I

Thank you, I only wish I could be there to walk with you. It's about time that the people of BC are given the opportunity to show that they are not stupid, and Mr. Hewett is a criminal. I only wish he had to serve his sentence right there in that pathetic sickening jail that Mr. Hewett built with your tax dollars. Power to the people of Brunswick County.

And power to you, you have

And power to you, you have obiviously seen the inside of that "pathetic sickening jail..." You have the right to remain silent!!!!!!!!

Disgusting

For Mr. Hewett to compare himself in any way to Officer Mitch Prince is disgusting! Officer Prince died in the commission of his duties protecting the people of Boiling Spring Lakes. Mr. Hewett in contrast has disgraced his badge and his oath to uphold and enforce the laws. How dare he sully the good name of a fallen officer by putting his name in the same sentence! How dare he dishonor that officer and that officer's family. Mitch Prince lived and died with honor. Mr. Hewett has no idea what the word means and proves it by making any comparison between him and officer Prince.

this is to gene

I could not have said it better my self. He will never be the man that officer prince was .

Ronald Hewett

I completely agree with Gene. It was so disturbing to hear that audio and to hear Ronald Hewett even say those words about Mitch Prince. God dont like ugly, and he should have to get up in public and apologize to the family of Mitch Prince. And he should have to apologize to the citizens of Brunswick County. He always liked the camera so now is his time of fame. Where is he now? I have known some of his former employees and I have always heard the stories of how they were treated.Thank God they had the courage to come forward and this county should stand behind them. And as for the comments about Charlie Miller, I support Charlie Miller he is a good man and has a good family. I wouldnt mind seeing Charlie Miller as our next Sheriff. So God Bless this county and the citizens that live here.

RONALD APOLOGIZE?????

He will never apologize to the Prince family or to the people of Brunswick County because he has never apologized to the Buff family whose book (OUT WITH THREE-THE MURDER AND BETRAYAL OF BALD HEAD POLICE OFFICER DAVINA BUFF JONES) has exposed him and his comrades in crime!! GOD help us all if anyone named in our book becomes our new Sheriff. I do pray those employees of BCSD that are honest and have integrity will endure. I have always felt remorse for the Prince family and it hurts me to know that my sister did not receive ANY RECOGNITION as a fallen officer.

Tanya, I feel that justice

Tanya, I feel that justice may be close for your sister and your family. Finally.

The truth shall set you free

I am glad that some of the deputies in that office FINALLY stood up and said enough was enough. All of the people who want to believe the sheriff is 100% innocent, listen to the phone conversations. One officer who was apparently doing a good job was recommended for promotion by a Lt, was denied because he didn't come to the sheriff's Christmas party. So what. If he earned the promotion, promote him. That would be a new practice in the office too. The racial and sexual comments made are on tape. Deal with it people. He's not as good as everyone wants to think. I was there for 4 years and saw people get shafted for NO reason. Now some of the people involved are now on the supoena list. I have complete respect for Capt Caison and Lt Crocker. I know it had to be hard to record those conversations and get that evidence on tape. But right is right and wrong is wrong. It took a lot of guts for some of those guys to stand up for what they belive in.

sheriff hewett

We have a problem here we have to address. When they put in a new sheriff is he going to be the same type of sheriff?. Or is he going to change after 4 years in office. We the people of Brunswick County need to get involved in our county and who have been running it. If the sheriff has done these thing, favers to those of you who have given moneys to his campain, friends and family who have received favers should be ashamed of yourself. The business owners, family members and friends are no better then Ronald. I have found that if a person can gain somthing they will become dishonest, just check out the other cheifs like Holden Beach. he is wanted from my home town for nonsupport. Is this the kind of people we want running our county also. I guess when the politetion in this county say jump we say how high, lets rise up and take back our county and get it right this time.

No more of the same, please

Wow!!! what a shock the corrupt caught by the corrupt, I happen to know every single one of the people on those affidavids, and would love to stand in the courtroom on monday and testifiy to thier character, yes they came forward and it would appear that they have done a good job at catching thier boss, but explain why they cant find missing girls, cant clean_ up the Quarters, seem to be very effecient at shooting people illegaly, and seem to have some attration that would make them oust thier boss instead of trying to get him help, , personally the whole bunch should be investigated, I believe they are a handful of deputies/ what do the other deputies have to say, also the democratic party should hold and emergency election so the the county citizens new and old can can show there personal appreciation to all of these well known righteous deputies good job you ousted a bad sherriff -maybe, So now how about (man-up) and lets see your resignations in support of the man that made you what you are today!!!! bad as him or worse, the only difference is he didnt tape and investigate you, but quess what you now have to deal with everyone who will find it hard to ever trust you gain.... good job once gain for confirming what all local people already know. hard to be that corrupt- as you have proven -for so long without a worthy group to assist- so thank you for your help in identification. History has always taught us that the best way to catch corruption is from the inside out and to that I must say Good Job Again, some of you cant catch a cold so after all these years you finally teamed together and caught the one big fish, but of course evidence was not hard to get all you had to do was stop being corrupt and act corrupt. I have never been in trouble with the law so please find another line for a comeback. (" bet you and your family members have been arrested before"), PS i have seen several of these officer arrested myself before they got jobs..... Iam sure those good sheriffs we had before Ronald help sweep those action under the rug, but in your minds thats not corruption its redemption.....Losers

cast the first stone

those without sin cast the first stone. it appears from these posts, we have many without sin. are they any better than sheriff hewett? we all have sinned and fallen short. forgive and forget and move on.

stones

Yes, we are better. WE are not in public office placed there by the citizens who's trust we must maintain. People judged him when they voted for him, but i guess thats OK with you?
