BOSTON,MA -- (WWAY ) - Senior Chaisson Allen scored 17 points and dished six assists in his final game at Matthews Arena to lead Northeastern to a 78-68 win over UNC Wilmington on Saturday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball action. The Huskies (11-19, 6-12 CAA) finish the regular season in 10th place in the CAA and will face Delaware in the opening round of the Virginia 529 College Savings Plan CAA Championship tournament on Friday at 6 p.m. in Richmond, Va.
The Seahawks (13-17, 7-11) got an early six-point lead, but Northeastern used a 10-0 run to take a first-half lead. The Huskies were up 20 in the second half and UNC Wilmington was unable to get closer than eight points down the stretch.
Allen led four Huskies in double figures as sophomore Joel Smith
scored 15 points, classmate Kauri Black notched 13 points and six
rebounds and Jonathan Lee added 12 points.
Keith Rendleman and Chad Tomko each scored 19 points to lead the
Seahawks and Tomko chipped in nine rebounds, seven assists and three
steals as well.
Making his first career start in his final home game, Ben Felix hit a
jumper to put the first two points on the board. Rendleman followed
with a traditional three-point play to put the Seahawks up by one.
Smith hit a three to put the Huskies back on top, but Tomko answered
with back-to-back threes that launched an 8-0 run for the Seahawks as
the visitors went up, 11-5, with 16:56 to go in the first half.
The Huskies got back on top with 10 unanswered points. Allen kicked
off the run with a three-pointer and the Huskies got three straight
baskets off steals, capped by a dunk from rookie Alex Harris that put
Northeastern up, 24-18, with 9:28 to go in the first.
The Huskies built the lead to double figures and took a 44-33 lead at
halftime after Smith knocked down a trey to close the first half.
Northeastern led by as many as 20 when Dinko Marshavelski set up an
Allen layup that had the Huskies up, 59-39, with 15:41 to go.
The Seahawks made a late comeback bid, using a 14-3 run to cut the
Huskies' lead to 69-61 with 3:48 to go, but Northeastern snuffed any
further Seahawks rally.
The Huskies shot 52.9 percent (27-of-51) from the floor and made half
of their three-point attempts (7-of-14), while holding the Seahawks to
48.3 percent (29-of-60) shooting from the floor and 25 percent
(4-of-16) from beyond the arc.
Northeastern now faces Delaware on Friday at 6 p.m. in the first round
of the Virginia 529 College Savings Plan Colonial Athletic Association
Men's Basketball Championship in Richmond, Va. The Fightin' Blue Hens
swept the regular-season series with the Huskies this season.
UNC Wilmington will face Georgia State on Friday in the first round of the CAA Championship at noon. UNCW beat Georgia State at Trask Coliseum. The Seahawks lost in overtime to GSU when they played in Atlanta.
