WILMINGTON,NC (WWAY) -- The high school baskeball state playoffs begin tonight for the New Hanover boys basketball team. They'll be facing the Wakefield Wolverines at 7pm in Fayetteville at the East Regionals.
Wildcat head coach Kirk Angel told WWAY that the Wake Wolverines "have two really good guards and a good post player and they play in a tough league Millbroook and managed to win their conference regular season and tournament. They will definitely be a handful."

The East Bladen girls have been to the state title game the last two seasons, but they came up short both times. Head coach Patty Evers hopes the third time will be the charm. "Everybody around here thinks we're supposed to win the state championship. There's nothing wrong with having that goal. In fact the girls have that goal, but that makes it stressful on the girls as well." East Bladen plays Pittsboro Northwood on Thursday at 8:30 in Fayetteville. That's the same time the Pender boys play Riverside on Thursday. The West Bladen boys will also play Pittsboro Northwood. That matchup will be Friday at 7pm.

WWAY will have highlights and post-game reaction from these games this week. In fact a large part of Sunday's Coach's Corner will be devoted to the state playoffs. The Coach's Corner will air at 6pm on Sunday.
