WILMINGTON,NC (WWAY) -- Reigning Colonial Athletic Association Player-of-the-Week Thomas Pope capped a ninth-inning rally with a RBI single to lift UNCW past North Florida, 9-8, in college baseball action on Tuesday at Brooks Field.
The Seahawks improved their record to 11-5 with their seventh straight win and their second one-run victory of the season. The Ospreys, meanwhile, dropped their fourth game in a row and fell to 7-9.
Trailing 8-6 in the ninth, UNCW plated three runs on four hits for the win. Junior Matt Campbell tripled off the left center field wall and scored one batter later on sophomore Hunter Ridge’s double inside the third base bag. Ridge would tie the game when he crossed plate on junior Andrew Cain’s double down the left field line. A ground out to right side by freshman Ryan LaGrange moved Cain to third where Pope singled him in through a drawn-in infield with the game-winning run.
Freshman Kelly Secrest (1-0) picked up his first win with a scoreless ninth inning.
Andrew Kameris (0-3) was saddled with the loss after allowing all three runs on four hits in one-third of an inning. Karmeris finished with three hits on the evening.
UNF had rallied from a 3-1 deficit by scoring six runs between the third and sixth innings. On four different occasions, the Ospreys were able to get their leadoff hitter on base and around to score.
The then go-ahead run came in the fifth when pinch hitter Shane Kennedy single home Andrew Karmeris, who doubled to open the inning against junior reliever Steven Davis.
Campbell also homered earlier in the game to give UNCW a 4-2 lead in the third.
Cain added three hits for the second straight game, going 3-for-4, scoring twice and collecting an RBI. Pope would finish with two hits to raise his conference-leading batting average to .464.
The series concludes on Wednesday with another 6 p.m. start.
Notes: The Seahawks allowed the first run of the game for the fourth straight outing … It was the first time this season the Seahawks rallied after trailing in the eighth inning … Campbell and Pope extended their hitting streaks to seven games … UNCW has won its last two one-run games and stands at 2-4 in those games.
