RALEIGH, NC (AP) — The state Highway Patrol and local police
departments are encouraging drivers to slow down on North
Carolina’s roads.

The patrol is sponsoring Operation Slow Down this week, while
local law enforcement agencies and the Governor’s Highway Safety
Program are conducting No Need 2 Speed. Officers say speed is the
leading cause of traffic fatalities and collisions in the state.

The speeding crackdown began Monday and continues through
Sunday. A kickoff event will be held Wednesday at Crabtree Lake in
Raleigh.
