School administrator faces sex charges

FAYETTEVILLE, NC (AP) -- The head of a private school in Cumberland County faces 120 charges stemming from what police say was the long-running sexual abuse of a student on campus.

Eastover Christian Academy chief administrator Craig Steven Wheeler was arrested Thursday and is being held in jail under nearly $6 million bail. Charges include committing a sex offense with a student, statutory rape and taking indecent liberties with a child.

Investigators say the 49-year-old Wheeler set up a makeshift residence at the school where he engaged in sexual acts with a female student between June 2008 and September 2009. The girl was 14 when the abuse began.

Eastover Christian Academy provides classes for children in pre-kindergarten through ninth grade, as well as childcare services. It wasn't clear if Wheeler has a lawyer.
