WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Some Cinco de Mayo partiers got a surprise on the way home from the bars last night: a DWI checkpoint.

Law enforcement set up the checkpoint on US 74/76 west just before the exit to NC 133 near Leland.

The Brunswick County Sheriff's Office says it yielded seven DWIs, more than 30 motor vehicle charges, six warrants to arrest, two possession of firearm by felon charges and one person who was wanted by the US Marshal Service. James Edward Dowd, 31, was arrested on a fugitive warrant from another state.

The DWI Checkpoint was put on by the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office in joint efforts with the Governor's Highway Safety Program. The agencies involved include Wilmington Police, Holden Beach Police, New Hanover County Sheriff's Office, Columbus County Sheriff's Department, Oak Island Police, Whiteville Police, Boiling
Spring Lakes Police and Northwest Police.
