WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Matt Campbell’s two-run homer in the eighth inning snapped a 6-all deadlock and propelled UNCW on to a 9-7 win over VCU to win the Colonial Athletic Association series on Saturday at Brooks Field.
The Seahawks concluded the regular season with a 30-26 mark overall and 18-12 in the CAA. UNCW will be the third seed in next week’s CAA Championship tournament where they’ll take on Old Dominion. The Rams wrapped up their season with a 22-32 record and 12-18 in the league.
In the eighth with one out, Michael Bass singled and Campbell followed with a two-run homer to left off losing pitcher Jonathan Watson (4-6). Senior David Shambley would pad the lead later in the inning with a RBI single for a 9-6 lead.
Andrew Harnage (3-1) picked up the win in relief and William Prince nailed down his fifth save of the season.
Bass and Shambley were joined by Alex Hill and Hunter Ridge with three-hit games. Andrew Cain belted his 10th homer of the season, drove in three and scored twice.
John Lenherr led VCU at the plate with three hits and he drove in two. Taylor Perkins finished with two hits and two runs batted in.
The game began as a pitcher’s duel between VCU’s Seth Cutler-Voltz and UNCW’s Tyler McSwain, though neither figured in the final decision. Neither team scored in the first four and a half innings before combining for 16 runs in the final half of the game.
