BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- The Brunswick County Sheriff's Office says they believe a man shot two people Monday and is still on the loose. Investigators say James Lewis Jr., 29, fired a gun in the Longwood area of the county yesterday, hitting two people neighbors say are family.

Police reports say 56-year-old Mary Lewis and 36-year-old Hakeem Muhammad were shot around 11:15 a.m. Monday. Reports say it happened at the home of one of the victims on Etheridge Road.

After the shooting, investigators say James Lewis ran away, and has still not been found.

Investigators say the injuries to both victims were not life threatening, but both were taken to the hospital and later released.

Neighbors said they did not want to be on camera because they were nervous about repercussions, but they say the suspect and the victims are related. One neighbor said James Lewis is Mary Lewis's son. Police reports list the same address and phone numbers for both victims and the suspect.

When we tried to speak with someone at the number listed, we were told they were not available, and then they hung up.

Other Longwood residents say most people in the community will not talk about the incident publicly, because they are a very tight-knit community.

The sheriff's office has two warrants out for the arrest of James Lewis for assault with a hand gun causing serious injury.

If you have any information on where James Lewis is, call the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office at (910) 253-2777.
