WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- New Hanover County Commissioners passed the FY2011-2012 budget today with a few tweaks, including a one percent merit pay increase for county employees. Commissioners also increased the budget for new hanover county schools by $1 million.
The ABC board also asked to approve a $6,400 raise and bonus for Dan Sykes, the new ABC CEO. Commissioners unanimously voted no.
"Our employees have seen roughly 19 furlough days in the past few years, reduction of pay, and it would just be, in my opinion, grossly unfair to have someone come in their first year and see a 1.4 percent increase in pay," Commission Chair Jonathan Barfield said. "Also, a $5,000 bonus that was requested as well in these economic times, I think that would be sending the wrong message."

Merit raise for county employees
It is not clear what the total raise for county employees was. Do they get a cost of living raise and a separate merit raise, as is the case in some companies? If so, what was the total raise?
That's the 6400 dollar question
Early in the story it speaks of:
..." a $6,400 raise and ..."
Barfield says:
"a $5,000 bonus that was requested as"
$6400.=$5000?
Gracious! I'm confused.

Hey Katie Harden, maybe you should let some of your colleagues do some reporting before you put them out of a job. Keep up the good work, I'd rather see you on t.v. than them any time.
