TOPSAIL BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- Crews fighting wildfires in Pender County set controlled burns today to try and get rid of fuel for the flames.

Many folks traveling to the area may be worried if their holiday plans will be ruined because of the fire and smoke. But tourists who have already made their way to the area say there is nothing to worry about.

The air is clear and the beach is clean at Topsail Beach. Chip Frane and his family came for their vacation earlier this week. He says they were worried at first about the fires in Pender County, but now that they are here, he says they do not have a care in the world.

"When we got here, the Pender County Emergency website kept talking about smoke over the roads, and there was actually a dense fog or something, and that was on our mind and a concern when we came down," Frane said. "But as we traveled down Sunday, we didn't encounter any smoke; didn't even smell any smoke."

Frane says since he has been in town, he has not had any problems because of the wildfire. He says he highly encourages anyone with weekend plans in the area to keep coming. He says there is no reason to cancel any plans.

No problem

I drove to Wallace and Duplin County today to check on my farm. I asked a HP officer, in Holly Ridge, if Highway 50 was closed; he confirmed it was open.

I did note some smoke odor around Maple Hill; it was strong enough to put the top up on the car. There really was no smoke on the highway.

Maybe the Yankees from New York & New Jersey won't get the report & will change their plans. One can only hope.

Why would you cancel beach plans?

When the fire reaches the beach you simply run, screaming like a banshee, and dive into the ocean, like that scene from "The Last Days of Pompeii."

plans

It would be the same ppl who thought our beaches were covered in oil from the BP spill.
