WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The next time the Coast Guard Cutter Diligence leaves port, it will set sail with a new man at the helm.
Douglas Goodwin took over as the new commander of the Diligence during a change of command ceremony this morning. The formal ceremony is a tradition that dates back to the Royal Navy.
Cmdr. Goodwin comes from the Coast Guard Cutter Hamilton, where he was an executive officer.
As for his new role, he says it's not every day you get to assume command.
"It's an honor, but it's humbling at the same time," Goodwin said. "The Coast Guard is entrusting me with the care and well being of 75 great, great young men. We're gonna go out, perform the Coast Guard's missions, perform the country's missions all up and down the east coast."
It's a patrol that takes the Diligence from New England to the Caribbean.
Former commander Harry Schmidt received a commissioning pin signifying his command for the past two years.
