WPD: Man wanting weed gets robbed; Suspect shoots self in hand

Location: 4600 New Centre Drive
Offense: Armed Robbery

Summary: The male victim, age 25, admitted that he called the suspect and met him in the wooded area behind the shopping center to buy marijuana.

Instead, the suspect pointed a small handgun at the victim and robbed him. The victim gave up his cash, an MP3 player and a cell phone. During the incident, the robber fired the pistol several times, apparently to scare the victim.

Follow-up investigation revealed that at some point after the robbery the suspect unintentionally shot himself in the hand. A family member had transported the suspect, Dymon Laquinn Black, d.o.b. 4-35-1987, to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for treatment.

A WPD detective found Black at the hospital and interviewed him. The detective obtained warrants and arrested the wounded robber (Black) for the armed robbery. In addition, Black was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, altering serial numbers and possession with intent to sell / deliver marijuana. He is in custody at the NHC detention facility under $100,000 bond.
