BURGAW, NC (WWAY) -- She got out of her cruiser, but forgot to put it in park. A Pender County Sheriff's deputy soon realized that she made a mistake when the car slammed into a home.
Around 1:30 a.m. on August 6 Sgt. Britt Chastain pulled up to the Pender County Jail. She got out of her cruiser, and moments later the car hit head-on into this home next door.
"Basically the house was a couple feet away from the side of the jail," Capt. Billy Sanders said. "The car rode into the front of the porch, the corner side of the porch."
According to this accident report Sgt. Chastain had not placed her car in park. It rolled from a resting position, going over this curb and into the foundation of the house.
The accident report also says a woman was in the cruiser as it rolled under the sally port of the jail and into the porch. The woman, who was on her way to a mental commitment at the hospital, was not hurt.
"Hopefully this accident won't happen again," Sander said. "It's random. I don't know if it has ever happened in my time of being here. It was just an accident."
The sheriff's office is using the crash as a learning experience. It has alerted each deputy about what happened to stress the need to be alert of what they are doing as they go through their day.
We contacted the owner of the home, Patsy Richardson, who is currently renting out the house. She said the damage may not look like much at first glance, but richardson is concerned about the strength of the foundation now.
Richardson is waiting on the county's insurance adjuster to determine the amount of damage. The deputy's cruiser suffered about $800 worth of damage.

A redneck is someone who parties out of the back of pick ups, drinks beer while riding on the roof of pickups, has loud pipes on the truck, antennas everywhere, dresses as a redneck, (jeans, western shirt, hats. boots ) etc. spits tobacco on the ground, plays country music LOUD and has a language all their own.

All kidding aside, you've got to love a group (Yankees) who takes credit for winning a war where more than half of all deaths were the result of disease (not bullets) - - typhoid fever, dysentery, tuberculosis and pneumonia. But, hey, maybe we caught it from you guys, so you can still take the credit!
