Silver Pride Cinema Festival prepares for 2nd annual event
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Silver Pride Cinema Festival is returning for a two-day event in Wilmington.
Hosted by the Cucalorus Film Foundation in partnership with the Silver Pride Circle of the Cape Fear, the festival will take place on Friday and Saturday at Jengo’s Playhouse located at 815 Princess Street.
Festival organizers MJ Arter and Ed Adams spoke with WWAY’s Jeff Rivenbark about the event.
Friday Schedule:
The festival kicks off Friday, May 29, with a screening of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert at 8 p.m.
The film, an Australian road comedy, follows two drag queens and a transgender woman on a colorful journey across the Outback.
Opening night festivities begin earlier in the evening with the “Red Carpet Gay-La” at 6 p.m.
Organizers say guests are encouraged to attend that event in drag.
“You’ll see these headdresses all over the red carpet,” Adams said. “You’ll see it all over the room.”
“We’ve spent the past couple of weeks making headdresses for this event,” Arter added.
Saturday Schedule:
The festival continues Saturday, May 30, with a full lineup of screenings and programming.
Featured films include Jimpa, a story of family and identity starring John Lithgow; Barbara Forever, which explores the life and work of pioneering filmmaker Barbara Hammer; and the Painted Bunting Shorts Block, a collection of diverse queer stories spanning genres and generations.
Festival passes and individual screening tickets are available online.
About the organizers:
The Silver Pride Circle of the Cape Fear does more than host the annual film festival.
“The Silver Pride Circle is LGBTQ elders, seniors helping LGBTQ seniors,” Adams said. “We provide programming to combat isolation. We do service and advocacy for the community. We essentially try to enhance the lives of our LGBTQ seniors here in the Wilmington area.”
