RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- Officials will have their eyes on whether
North Carolina's unemployment rate keeps rising as government
workers lose their jobs or private companies are adding help.
The Employment Security Commission on Friday releases data
showing the state unemployment rate for July. June's jobless rate
rose to 9.9 percent as community colleges, universities and other
state government employers cut 7,600 workers that month.
The nearly $20 billion state budget took effect in July, and the
spending plan included planned layoffs throughout state government.
