Topsail Beach damage estimated at $1 million

TOPSAIL BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- Although Hurricane Irene hit beach communities like Topsail Island pretty hard, there are not many reports of major damage.

Aside from some minor flooding and a few missing shingles, Topsail Island seemed to weather the storm quite well.

Topsail Beach has reported that there were very minimal property damage from the hurricane. About 11 docks were damaged or washed away, and more than 300 homes reported missing shingles and siding on their homes.

Town Manager Tim Holloman says the damage will cost a little more than $1 million to repair, which is less than expected.

"I think as far as property damage, we fared really well," Holloman said. "We fared well here, too, in town with no injury or loss of life. So the effects of the storm were minimal at most, so we're very fortunate."

Holloman says the $1 million clean-up estimate does not include costs to correct beach erosion. He says the town should have an estimate on how much that will cost in the next couple of days after experts assess the damage.

Topsail was my "home away

Topsail was my "home away from home" for 12 years; Every September/October I would come down for a vacation. And though I will never be able to visit my beloved Topsail again, it makes me VERY happy to read that there was relatively little damage done as a result of Irene. Topsail is the best!

Damage to Topsail

I am so glad to hear the damage to Topsail Island wasn't as bad as other areas hit by Hurricane Irene. We had our first stay there this year but it will not be our last stay as we so enjoyed our week on the beach! You have a great community! Sincerely, Nelda Reagan, Big Spring, Texas
