McIntyre pushing Congress to honor veterans who continue service in community

READ MORE:

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Rep. Mike McIntyre (D-7th District) was in Wilmington this afternoon to talk new legislation, and he thinks it's an issue everyone in Congress should be able to come together on.

McIntyre was in town to honor our veterans. He says he's taking the tribute a step farther and attempting to create the Veterans Distinguished Public Service Award.

Bud Sweetman of Sunset Beach was the first to receive the award McIntyre hopes will go national.

Sweetman served in Europe during World War II. In the decades since, he has served the community in countless ways including donating nearly 40 gallons of blood to the American Red Cross.

McIntyre says in times like these, when Congress cannot seem to agree on anything, he thinks leaders should come together to support those who have served our country.

"Just as our community shows their appreciation, we want to show that appreciation on the national level," McIntyre said, "and I feel like, United States Congress, this is something that with all the other bickering going on and disputes about other things, we can stand together in honoring our veterans and honoring our military, and we certainly should do it."

McIntyre has introduced the bill in the House of Representatives to establish the Department of Veterans Affairs Medal for Distinguished Public Service. He hopes it will become law soon.

Sweetman says he plans to continue to give blood and help in any way he can, because he says that's what patriots do.

No Check Mike!

Wow,you usually show up to town with a check(wealth redistribution) in hand with your name on it.You better run from that socialist party you are associated with because there is going to be an across the board house cleaning come election time. You can not straddle the fence with that Blue Dog label anymore. There is no gray area between the two parties at this present time.Democrat(Socialist) vs. Republican(Conservative seeking independence).A good Democrat will be in Charlotte with Happy Perdue and Barry Obama holding hands at the convention celebrating their implementation of the Saul Alinsky plan.

Smoke and mirrors

You should be ashamed of yourself for taking advantage of the veterans and their service in order to prop yourself up. We don't need pitty, nor do we need a pat on the back for doing what we need to do to support and defend the Constitution. Instead, you should be doing your part to balance the budget. All appropriations begin in Congress and you sorry bunch of good for nothings, have not been able to write and approve a budget in 3 years. Pathetic!
