Family, friends mark murder victim's birthday with candlelight vigil

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Family and friends of a woman killed in Wilmington early this year continue to mourn her loss. Tonight they'll mark what would have been her 25th birthday with a candlelight vigil.

Latricia Scott's family says they are still devastated by her death, and today on her birthday, it's even harder.

Linda Scott says life has been hard without her daughter, but the family is doing everything it can to get by.

Scott says she knew something was wrong when her daughter did not come home from school January 10. She has been distraught ever since.

Scott says when she woke up this morning, she began celebrating her daughter's life only to realize that it had been taken away two months ago.

"I said, 'Children, children! Happy birthday! Happy birthday!' And (my son) Craig said, 'Don't start that. Tricia's gone.' And I went to the graveyard, put flowers on her grave, and I broke down and I started crying. I said 'Baby, why you got to leave me?'" Scott said.

Scott says she thought it was hard on the family when Latricia's body was found, but as time passes, she says it doesn't get any easier.

The vigil for Latricia Scott starts at 6 p.m. at 1115 Cowan Street, where her body was found.
