WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Some athletes got to shine today at UNC Wilmington. The New Hanover County Special Olympics held its spring games on the campus track today.
Nearly 700 athletes showed up to enjoy several different activities. They did relays, participated in the long jump and got to compete in events that focused on developmental skills.
Six-year-old Lillian Pettigrew received two first place ribbons. Her proud mom is grateful her daughter got a chance to shine.
"It's really exciting, because I know Lillian has a lot of potential, and she's able to show this potential out here on the track today with the other kids," Darcie Pettigrew said.
This year, about 400 volunteers helped out.
Athletes from elementary school to high school enjoyed the morning events. Adults got the chance to compete this afternoon.
