Norfleet's at it again...

...Arrested again for assault. His mug showed up on Star-News site yesterday.

This story should be about

This story should be about how sadly our lawmakers have let down the mentally ill, rather than about making fun of a sick man. I know Fleet. He comes from one of the finest families around, he was taught right from wrong, he went to Sunday School. He could be YOUR child! He was educated - he is highly intelligent. He is also a schizophrenic. He and his loving family have battled his disease and the erratic choices that it burdens him with since he was a teenager. There is no reason he assaulted Dr. McKeithan - except his sick mind. Instead of being so quick to judge and make fun of others, put that big mouth to good use and contact the people who spend your tax money. The law says that we can't force Fleet to take his meds or stay in a treatment facility, but we can support him in jail when he does random acts like this. Makes lots of sense, huh?

MENTAL ILLNESS

I WORK AT A BUSINESS ON MARKET ST AND THIS GUY WAS IN HERE RANTING ABOUT POLITICS AND THE EDUCATION SYSTEM FOR AT LEAST AN HOUR TO WHO EVER WOULD LISTEN. HE WOULD PICK UP A STACK OF BROCHURES AND PUT THEM DOWN. WE WOULD PUT THEM AWAY AND HE WOULD RE GATHER THEM AND PUT THEM DOWN AGAIN/ WE WERE ON THE VERGE OF CALLING THE POLICE WHEN HE FINALLY LEFT.I DON'T THINK HE KNEW WHERE HE WAS OR WHAT HE WAS DOING. WE WERE MORE CONCERNED ABOUT HIS MENTAL STATE THAN ANYTHING. HE OBVIOUSLY NEEDS MEDICAL HELP.

So...he likes to scrap.

He just doesn't seem to properly pick his battles.

Assault

Assaults in jails occur with alot more frequency than the average citizen would think!Officers/Deputies that work in the jail are not recognized for their efforts and sacrifices. One officer supervising 60 or more inmates is not a fair fight. Thank you Detention/Corrections Officers for all that you do!

Ok lets face reality here

This guy needs a thorough pysch evaluation done. Something just aint right with him. The attack alone against the CFCC President made me think he was a few cards short of a full deck but this about cinchs it. The guy obviously has a legit mental illness issue, likely a persucutorial issue as well as an issue with authority figures or if we feels threatened he lashes out.. he doesnt belong in jail he belongs in a facility where he can get the proper mental health help he needs. Sadly to get that help he'd likely have ot be shipped to Cherry because hes likely indigent and the Oaks wont touch him since he doesnt have insurance to cover his medical needs. (Another reason why many of us in the medical profession hope and pray the old Brunswick Hospital does in fact get turned into a short term acute inpatient facility for those who are not extremely violent offenders.

The best therapy this man could receive...

...would be picking a fight with the wrong person and being beaten to within an inch of his life. Nothing calms down a bully (sane or crazy) better than a thorough, bloody, butt-whipping.

Mental

Any assault is a violent offense to me, purhaps he just hasn't assaulted the right person yet. It could be self corrective at that point. Not that I don't agree with you for the most part, but just how much does normal society have to endure from violent offenders? Mental or Mean, doesn't matter when you're the one or someone you love is the one getting assaulted. Most people have some excuse or another for thier bad behavior, it's lack of self control and ownership. Hope one day there is a majic pill to fix everyone, then if you could only get them to take it, we all might be safe. Good Luck

The truth is

The mental health system is this state has been a complete and utter mess since Governor Early andthe Democrats demanded we come up with more local and community options well the money just isnt there all it did was dump the problem on local communities and cities/counties who dont have the facilities, staffing or anythingelse to deal with such cases.. When I lived and worked up in New Bern we had constantly situations where we had limited resources at our own inhouse locked facility much like the Oaks here in Wilmington however you come across a violent offender who has no self-control and in my luck I worked 2 nights this one gentleman came in who was literally on the verge of being a cross over to the next serial killer (he was torturing and killing animals).. He ended up at Cherry Hospital which is where all medicaid/uninsured cases went.. The truth is we have 3 literally 3 acute mental hospitals in this entire state of ours to deal with individuals who are violent and mentally ill Cherry Hospital near Goldsboro, Dix which is closing and being replaced by a unit in Butner near the Fed Prison and Broughton Hospital over west of Hickory NC.. There arent enough beds to deal with and treat these people who have very serious mental health issues. I know the idea was to deinstitutionalize people to put them in more community and home like settings but with some that just doesnt work and is not an option and I blame Governor Easley and his cronies along with the State Democratic controlled legislature that created this entire mess back inthe mid 2000s and is now coming home to roast more and more each day. You would be surprised to find out that a respectable percent of 'criminals' housed in jails are there due to mental illness not due to actually criminal actions. They act out therefore then end up locked up for disorderly conduct or assault due to anger and impulse control issues which may seem cut and dry to you and I but for those who suffer mental illness its not so easy. These people blackout and dont remember things its sad but true.. Not to mention those who suffer from bipolar disorder who are depressed suddenly only to end up going on 2-3 day benders which can include running up thousands of dollars or credit card bills or worse they steal items . They know its wrong but again its impulse control and such.. Im not justifying any criminal acts but what I am saying is our mental health system is broken now even more so then before and the solution to just shove them in a jail cell for 2-4 weeks thenthey end up on the street homeless doesnt solve anything. My next statement is probably goign to piss off some folks but maybe if DSS and Social Workers spent more time getting help for these mentally ill people who can get better instead of encourgaing the creekwood crowd to breed like rabbits we might all be better off.. One is about helping somebody in need. Another is just breeding dependance on the system.. I think in the end we know which is the better option.
