WILMINGTON,NC (WWAY) – Pending school board approval Nathan Faulk will take over the boys basketball program at Laney High School. Faulk replaces veteran coach Fred Lynch who will remain at the school as the athletics director. Faulk actually served as an assistant basketball coach at Laney under Fred Lynch in the early 2000’s. “I’m honored to be replacing a man who has served as a mentor, friend, and father figure to me over the past 12 years,” Faulk said. “It is humbling to think I am the third coach in Laney history and taking the place of a man who has roamed the sidelines for 25+ years. The Laney name, brand and history is very special. I’m lucky to now be part of that again.”

Nathan Faulk is a graduate of UNC Wilmington. He’s currently the boys basketball coach at South View High School in Cumberland County. The Nakina native was the head coach at South Columbus High prior to South View. Both schools showed a great amount of improvement in basketball under Faulk’s guidance.

Nathan Faulk is also the head basketball coach of the Flight 22 basketball team that historically features several players from Wilmington. Flight 22 is considered to be one of the best teams on the spring/summer circuit in the southeast. Here’s a link to WWAY’s story on Flight 22’s tournament title this past weekend. http://www.wwaytv3.com/2012/04/29/wilmington-based-flight-22-basketball-team-wins-big-shots-event-dc

Nathan Faulk will be featured on the Coach’s Corner on Sunday. Check out Laney’s new head basketball coach on WWAY at 6pm on Sunday.

You poor laney folks think you are going to be successful in every sport you have! You guys play very weak small schools every year in every sport. That makes you guys look ok unless people follow who the wins came against! this new coach is at best below average, but that’s par for the course at laney. You now will get to enjoy 5 years of losses at the hands of all the county schools in almost everything! The folks who choose laney for athletics are just ignorant and that’s sad… Faulk will win maybe 3 games in conference but will and should beat the sorry schools they schedule before confernce begins. Football is the same with that funny schedule they play too. Enjoy your seasons at laney the real athletes go anywhere else but laney!

Laney HS made a BIG hit today. No one will ever out work or out prepare Coach Faulk. His dedication to his players, parents and his school will not be matched. Laney parents/boosters will certainly be proud of their basketball program and the way their student/athletes will represent them. Laney HS is not only getting a GREAT Coach, but LHS is getting a tremendous teacher and an even better PERSON. Other basketball programs in New Hanover County better get back to work because Laney is coming. They certainly hit the Lottery today. Good Luck to Coach Faulk and the Bucs!!

If the players leave now it will be their loss. I doubt Coach Faulk keeps all of the old coaching staff, Curley.

What a joke!! i wonder how many kids will leave and go to NHHS, Dallas Brown would have been a perfect fit for the program, he would have kept the kids at Laney. He rebuilds programs, i do not call a losing record rebuilding. Maybe he will keep the old coaching staff, Larry, Moe and Curley!!!

Parents, if you want your kids to succeed and play outside of high school, do NOT have your kids play at laney or flight 22. Faulk will continue the same favortism tradition that Lynch left behind. Laney High School, WHAT ARE YOU THINKING!!

I went to High School with Nathan, and I can tell you he hasn’t changed a bit. Still the great person, hard worker, and team player he has always been. Laney has made a tremendous gain. Ill be watching you with great interest. The haters obviously have never met him or paid any attention at all to his record, his history of turning around programs that were in peril before his arrival. He will do great things.

Good Luck, Nathan/Bucs!

Just wanted to say congratulations to Nathan Faulk on his new coaching position. He will honor the Laney name and do a great job continuing the growth of their program. South View will miss him, but his talents will be put to good use next year! We are so proud.

You two must be what is referred to as “poor sports.” Obviously, YOUR favorite was not chosen for the position. If you knew Coach Faulk, you would know that he gives his all to his kids. He loves the game of basketball. So I suggest this coming up season that you sit back, relax, and enjoy the game!

Always haters in the crowed, that god the candidates of these posters did not get the job. If you dont like the decision for the job, then stay away or maybe you should have applied for the job, but check that you would not have gotten the job. Coach Faulk has proved himself and South Views loss is Laney’s gain.

Seeing people talk bad about Coach Faulk is sickening to me. Take it from a current player that this man is a great coach and has busted his behind to turn around a torn program. This man has been through hell and high waters with South view’s Basketball program and has accumulated a season in which we won more games than south view has in 7 yeasr , 7 YEARS! so obviously he knows something about changing a program and I hate that he had to leave at the time he does (my senior year) but I wish nothing but the best for him in the future and all of our success next year will be because of Nathan Faulk .
