WILMINGTON, NC (AP) -- A Democratic Party official will try to get a Wilmington polling place moved because the church used for this week's balloting had a sign relating to the constitutional amendment on gay marriage.

The StarNews reports the marquee outside Devon Park United Methodist Church proclaimed "A true marriage is male and female and God."

Democratic precinct chairman Nancy Ballard Cox considers the sign voter intimidation and plans to ask elections officials to change voting in the precinct to another location. The constitutional amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman passed statewide, it was rejected by a majority of voters in the precinct.

Elections officials ruled the church sign was beyond a buffer zone between campaign signs and the door of the polling place.

Aren't there enough schools,

Aren't there enough schools, firehouses, libraries and other public facilities in which to conduct voting? Why is chruch property used for public elections in the first place?

The church, according to my understanding of our Constitution does have the right to express itself. How is this church's posting on its sign any different from partisan workers holding signs and handing out voters' guides at any other polling place?

I am neither a fan of the periodic massing of political signage on all of our roadsides during election seasons but I am pleased to see how quickly they are removed after the election.

I'm certain that I am not alone when I say that my mind is made up before I go to the polling place. A road sign has never changed how I would vote, nor would a party worker at the entry of a voting place.

I am sure that the message on this sign did not contribute to the super-majority by which Amendment One passed.

The Against voters lost. Now

The Against voters lost. Now get over it. LOL

I haven't seen any reports

I haven't seen any reports about the sign out twisting the arms of voters. Why is that sign any different than other signs put up at the polling place? You can drive by the Armory in Shallotte during early voting and election day and you will see all kinds of political signs. The people of the church had a right to express their opinions and no laws were broken.

Anyway, how can it even be considered intimidation when we vote by secret ballot?

"God" created everything-being gay is part of everything

If we enforce Biblical rhetoric.
we should enforce "all" of the teachings of the all knowing bible.

hypocrites beware and thump as hard as you can.

read the bible it is full of hate.

man's interpretations of the religion is justification for hate/discrimination around the world.

c'mon drink the cool-aid

Your votes lost. Get over it

Your votes lost. Get over it

fooled!

whomever voted FOR this amendment didn't do their research prior to voting. google the first amendment and READ what it stands for. It's not about accepting or not accepting "gay" marriages, that was just the smoke screen for the "Bible Belt" area. The main topic was about same sex marriage, thats all they wanted you to focus on and they suceeded. It's going to affect much, much more than just not allowing "same sex marriage". No single mother will be able to receive assistance of any kind be it with food, health or domestic violence. They will have to be married, one man and one woman in unity or the state of NC will no longer acknowlede their needs. The state of NC is in trouble, and it's the ones that didn't do their research and voted FOR this amendment that put us there. God help us.

The Against people LOST. Get

The Against people LOST. Get over it. LOL

Yep

You're right. And if people had done their research they would know that gay marriage is already illegal in NC. If this amendment had failed, gay people couldn't just go to the courthouse and get married, that's what they don't understand. But then again you had to actually care about who and what you were voting for to do research. People just don't educate themselves before they check a box.

Why are YOU trying to throw

Why are YOU trying to throw smoke screens out there? Amendment 1 is only about getting Tax money and for Insurance purposes.....meaning it is all about money. Gay couples are still protected under the law the same as male/female couples are. Single mothers, gay or straight, have the same rights when it comes to assistance with health care or food.

You are trying to do the exact same thing you are accusing others of doing....distorting the facts

The First Ammendment

states that Congress shall not establish one National Religion and that they may not interfere with the free exercise of Religion. It does not imply a freedom from Religion. Judeo - Christian Religion texts record, one Man with one Woman is the only acceptable relationship.

Maybe it is a good thing it

Maybe it is a good thing it passed if it will get some off welfare and make them more self-sufficient. If you can't feed 'em, don't breed 'em......same goes for insurance.

Prove EVERY point you just

Prove EVERY point you just made, and I would regret my vote for it, but as the last line says, you have the chance to address, but in the end, the people in this state voted NO. Are you trying to say being a homosexual is a religion? if not... MOVE!

Bull

You are about as full of ---- as a christmas turkey.

Church sign

If a sign like this causes a democrat to worry then you people give a whole new meaning to the word SHEEP. This sign is not likely to change anyone's. mind.

The church has the right to

The church has the right to post what their values are on their property!!!!! We place the signs we want on our property...

What is the difference

What is the difference between the Church putting up that sign and lobbyists handing out pamphlets as you walk up to the polling site? If anything the lobbyists are more intimating than a sign

Yes but...

Yes, I agree private properly but this place was used for a public function. That showed some bias. The church could have just left the sign blank for impartiality but again, that didn't happen.

the churches rights

Not entirley true. There is a buffer zone as the article mentions. They do not have a right to post signage within that buffer zone even though it is their property. Rules for a voting location would be a little differant than those that apply to our private homes, dont you think?

Re: The church has the right to

No one is trying to stop them from saying what they want. The only issue here is should they be a polling place. Since the sign clearly was in relation to Amendment One, I believe they have shown that they should not.
