RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- Pro-gun advocates worry that a bill to permit handguns in North Carolina bars is being quietly shoved aside.

The bill would allow people with concealed weapons licenses to carry guns into businesses that serve alcohol. The bill is currently on hold in the Senate Finance Committee and is not scheduled for discussion.

Pro-gun advocates think the Senate's inaction is intentional. The president of Grass Roots North Carolina, F. Paul Valone, says senators are afraid to take up the controversial legislation before the November election.

Senate leader Phil Berger says legislators are busy working on the budget and will address the bill as soon as they can. Berger says it is a matter of when, not if, the bill gets put to vote.

Guns in bars

Just what we need drunks in bars carrying concealed weapons. I had a friend a few weeks ago drunk, at home, carrying his loaded handgun in his neighborhood, shot a rabid cat that started to attack him on his leg but also shot his foot 3X but killed the cat. Now if he had been straight he might've only shot the cat. He's going thru the rabies vaccine but also his foot has 3 bullet holes. And he's shooting every stray cat in the neighborhood, he's killed 4 in the last 10 days, afraid that they are all rabid. So folks keep your cats at home if you want them alive. Like I said, just what we need are drunks in bars carrying concealed weapons. Where's the protection of family in that?

One big difference

Your friend is an idiot. The request isn't to allow drinking AND a concealed weapons, it is to allow a permit holder keep his weapon on him/her while in establishments that sells alcohol.

Again, it's sad

that only criminals can walk into a place that serves alcohol carrying a handgun. So I decide to take the family downtown, you know "Bring It!", and have a nice dinner. Then maybe walk down to the river front and take in the night air. And start our trek back to the minivan. It's dark. It's just a couple or few blocks up the street. Of course there are signs about no weapons on the parking deck so that's out. But I should feel good knowing that I DIDN'T DRINK and my pistol is SAFE IN THE GLOVE COMPARTMENT OF THE MINIVAN! Because I value my right and privilege to carry a concealed weapon I give up the right to protect myself and my family during this outing! Please point me to the statistics but did the murder rate go up since the last CCW legislation was passed here in NC? And I mean going up being DIRECTLY related to the passing of this legislation. Again, it's sad. Sad that criminals have a leg up on people that are law abiding AND THEY KNOW IT. So I try to be aware. I try to somehow "plan" for a "situation" in my mind. I at least can carry my knife but you know what they say about bringing a knife to a gun fight... . It's sad.

Do like most everybody

Do like most everybody else.......stay away from downtown Wilmington. I feel like this........if my gun is not welcome, neither am I. I never do business with any merchant that displays any anti-gun notice in or on their establishment.
