RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- North Carolina prosecutors say the State Bureau of Investigation is refusing to turn over the failed certification tests of some crime lab analysis.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported about two dozen analysts failed national certification tests that were supposed to reassure the public that lab work was correct.
The SBI was criticized two years ago when an auditor found that hundreds of old blood examinations were incorrectly reported. Officials say agency's policies and practices improperly favored prosecutors.
Prosecutors say the SBI is now refusing to turn over the test results, saying they are private personnel records.
Prosecutors say that could hamper cases handled by the lab workers.
Lab director Joe John says he intended to inform prosecutors in January but never mailed a letter he wrote.
