Blazing temperatures could impact Southport festival activities

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) -- The annual NC 4th of July Festival kicks off tomorrow in Southport with a slew of different activities, including a firefighter's competition. Though they won't be fighting any fire, they will be battling some extreme heat all afternoon.

Southport's fire chief says they plan to have lots of water involved to keep everyone cool.

"We'll have plenty of water, plenty of beverages there and they can wet each other," Chief Greg Cumbee said. "There will be a lot of people getting wet tomorrow. I'm sure the hoses will be turned on them in the barrel push, the bucket brigade and there's a big pool of water. I'm sure a lot of them will end up in it.

The firefighter competition starts at 10 a.m. and will last in the afternoon. There's also a 5K run that starts at 8 a.m., when the temperature should be a little cooler.
