Wilmington continues to battle record-setting heat

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- There's no denying it's hot outside, but this isn't just typical summer weather. We're dealing with record-breaking heat.

With high humidity levels and temperatures peaking at 103 degrees, this heat wave has people making a splash.

"It's hot, and people need a place to go, so we're coming to the pool," said Serena Prentice, part of the Community Boys & Girls Club.

The group heads to the Northside Pool to stay cool. Others head to the beach. Wilmingtonian Lily Hall says she's practically been living in a bathing suit.

"It's definitely the hottest summer I've ever been here for, and it is not fun at all," Hall.

But the heat is fun for Rita's Italian Ice at Wrightsville Beach.

"We have seen an incredible boom in business," Rita's Martha Godwin said. "It's been absolutely fabulous since last week when the temperatures soared into the hundreds. It's been crazy."

It's been crazy hot, keeping National Weather Service meteorologist Tim Armstrong on his toes, in the office and out of the heat.

"I really enjoy the unusual weather when we break records and so forth," Armstrong said. "Even when we get a mild hurricane to the area, for me, that's rather exciting."

Wilmington hit 100 or above three days in a row last week, which ties the all-time record set back in 1977 for most consecutive 100-degree readings. Armstrong says temperatures like this are unusual so many days in a row this close to the coast.

Not only is it hot, but it's also dry. Wilmington is 28 inches short on rainfall over the past five years.
