One arrested, one at large after attempted moped theft sparks UNCW safety alert

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A report of armed men trying to steal a moped led to a safety alert at UNCW overnight.

Wilmington Police say they got a call from a man who said two men tried to shoot him when he caught them trying to hotwire his moped near Campus Edge Apartments.

The report led UNCW to issue a campus safety alert for a couple of hours. It ended after UNCW Police later spotted the duo riding another moped across campus and pulled them over. The passenger, Deandre Sha'he Waktins, 17, surrendered. He is charged with attempted felony larceny and placed under $2,000 secured bond. Police say the driver rode away. He is still at large. Police say there is no evidence the suspects had a gun.

A WPD officer later found the moped the two were riding abandoned behind 4754 Seahawk Square. Police say it had been stolen Saturday from the 2200 block of Wrightsville Avenue. It has been returned to the owner. No charges have been filed in that theft.

No weapons involved. So was the attempted shooting a scare tactic or real? Did he point his finger at someone?
