WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- We often take for granted all the different organizations and help available here in our country. But today, we were reminded that not every country has a culture of giving.
Three journalists from the Republic of Moldova were in Wilmington today to learn more about how our community works. With a touch of southern hospitality and many volunteer hours, the group says they're ready to take the mission back to Moldova.
"To have our Moldovan viewers hearing these ideas and having them implanted somewhere in their hearts and heads and doing this stuff back at home," reporter Andrei Bolocan said.
The American dream is plastered through movies of success stories. But three Moldovan journalists visiting the United States say their vision of the land of the free is a little different.
"Back at home will will not be advocating so much," Bolocan said, "but we will just say, 'Here is what Americans do. If you just get the example and good practices and implement, it's going to make you proud one day and make you happy.'"
The focus of the group's documentary is volunteerism. The team from Moldova have visited several states and been shown many different non-profit organizations like Habitat for Humanity and Meals on Wheels. They say what the have experienced in the US is much different from what they know at home.
"There are some myths about America. This is a myth that turned out to be true for me, and that's a happy ending," producer Anastila Condruc said.
The group hopes by showcasing the different organizations and those who give their time with little in return, their relatively new nation will work to be more generous like they have seen in America.
"I hope the people back home will have the same experience that I've had," Condruc said. "They will say, 'America is not only about movies and Hollywood. It's about real people doing real things. And maybe this is their secret to why their society works so well.'"
The group says they have seen so much kindness and southern hospitality in North Carolina. They were also looking forward to seeing the Atlantic Ocean today in Wrightsville Beach.
