WPD Cop Camp hits the ice

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The Wilmington Police Department's Cop Camp headed to the Wilmington Ice House today to cool off in style.

The summer program aims to help children who may not be able to participate in different activities and give them the opportunity to get involved.

Police Chief Ralph Evangelous says he hopes the fun activities the kids get to do have a lasting effect on their future.

"(We want them to know) that our police officers are just like them, I mean we're just normal people who are doing a job, and we're developing these relationships with them so that as they grow up they'll remember these times, and this can only make things better," Evangleous said.

Evangelous says Cop Camp is heading outdoors later this week with kayaking trips. The kids also hope to strike it big at the bowling alley.
