OCEAN ISLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- With the opening of commercial oyster season on October 15, what better way to celebrate than by heading over to the North Carolina Oyster Festival?
It is estimated that close to 30,000 people came to the tiny town of Ocean Isle Beach, which has a full time population of close to 600, to taste some of North Carolina's best shellfish.
"It started out as friends getting together and having a good time with fellowship and it has sort of grown," said Shannon Viera of the Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce. "Now instead of just having a hundred or so friends having oysters together it's thousands and thousands, and they enjoy it. The one thing they want is a t-shirt, number one. They have to get their Oyster Festival t-shirt, and some of them have every single shirt that has ever been printed."
All proceeds from the Oyster Festival go towards funding various programs for the Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce.
